Hi

I have a NetComm NB6Plus4Wn wireless modem router. This is located down stairs.

Upstairs I have a computer with a NetComm NP902n wireless USB adapter. When checking the speed of it using wireless network connection status it shows it as 54Mbps. This is with the modem transmitting on mixed mode b/g/n.

When I change the modem to transmit in N mode only the adapter won't connect at all.

The signal strength is at almost 100% as the distance between the modem and adapter is about 10m (as the crow flies).

Given that I have a n modem and a n adapter should they not be able to get upto 300Mbps in speed?

Is there something, setting wise, that I need to do?

I also have a computer downstairs with a Belkin wireless n adapter and that is showing a speed of 130Mbps.

I don't profess to know alot about wireless so may be epecting too much or just doing something wrong. So any
info or help appreciated.

if you're running encryption on the signal, you might try switching between TKIP and AES and see if that makes a difference. With my lenovo lappy, i coulndt connect on N if it set the wrong encryption method

What other APs can the slow PC see, purhaps its suffering under interference. WiFi in all its flavours is a odd beast, there are so many variables both between PHY parts and simply in the realm mix that to pin hopes on advertised speeds is pretty fruitless.

Use WiFi as a convenience connection, it lets you use your various PCs where ever throughout your home with ease, but if you want performance use a cable, wireless is simply to unpredictable. Further once you have more than one PC connected to an AP the system performance will go to pot, basic 802.11 WiFi in all its flavours relies on a very basic point to multipoint protocol (ie collision detection and retry), as soon as there is more than one player in the field the performance is anyones guess.

Thanks Regs I'll try without it without encryption.

Cyril - I do appreciate that wi-fi can be influenced by all sorts of interference. However of the few wi-fi networks in the area none are using the same chanel.

Also before I started using the NetComm adapter upstairs I was using the Belkin up there. It was able to connect at 130Mbps.

With the NetComm showing 54Mbps it suggests that it might only be receiving the b or g signal but not the n?

What transimission mode do you have it on the netcomm?

Set the channel width to 40mhz, primary channel to lower and choose channel 1, 6 or 11 whichever is least crowded

Problem sorted! Thanks Regs and raab. With the settings as suggested by raab and using AES encryption now at 270Mbps.

Next step in the hopefully not too distant future is to cable to upstairs so won't have this problem!
