I looking for ways to fireproof the three NAS units I am installing into our WAN network.
Aside from some data replication work these NAS hold the backup and archive files for my organisation.
I can handle most security stuff except the basic burning building syndrome so here's my idea
I while back when my warehouse was getting its annual fire inspection I asked the fire officer what the most fire proof part of a building , this guy who had seen hundreds of burnt out buildings said " the fridge, in every but out building I have inspected the inside of the fridge is always in perfect condition" . Kinda make sense , they are steel and well insulated.
Cool .. so I'm thinking to put my NAS units in small fridges. Maybe I'll hid them behind some beers so the thiefs steal the beer and leave the strange black box in the back alone

Can anyone see a problem here ?

Someone steals the fridge ? ;)

Fridges are reasonably airtight - you'll want some airflow. (Hence why little kids shouldnt play in them...or big kids for that matter.)

How are you going to run the cables into the fridge without compromising the fire-proofness of the fridge? The plastic on the cables will burn and conduct the fire straight into your devices.
Wireless maybe?

There are dedicated devices around designed to withstand fire.

The simpler option in my opinion is to have proper off site backups, or even off site replication if the data is critical.

Condensation buildup could be fun.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Meh, minor detail. Laughing

Maybe an online backup solution would be the go.

I think the only way you'd be able to get power through in a fireproof manner would be to somehow remove the plastic and insulate the power cable with ceramics, god knows how you'd do that without creating more of a fire risk though.

Yes cables - power and LAN - could be an issue - I'll have to think about grommet or simliar.

"There are dedicated devices around designed to withstand fire"
Yes have you seen the price of them! US$10,000 for 4 TB
http://www.iosafe.com.au/Australia/products/iosafe-r4-ruggedized-nas.html

"The simpler option in my opinion is to have proper off site backups" - this can get pricey
I have 250GB in Back up files - with 30 GB backing up every day - of site pricing and bandwidth ( upload speeds are the crippler) is an issue .

I checked a guy who made one with an off the shelf fireproof safe - the safe had a power plugs inside ....
So wire up a power plug inside , wire up a lan connection point inside , doubled up with the same on the outside - workable ?

XPD - you got me worried abotu condensation though

" Have you figured out how to earthquake proof your NASes? I dont think fridge is good enough" good point nakedmolerat .

The fridge will need shock absorbers - damn this is getting complicated
