Hi Router Guru's!

I'm looking for my all-in-one ideal device. No luck yet but the search terms are so general, that it throws up lots of devices.

My ideal device would have:

- all in one adsl modem / router / wifi point
- 4 port router (gigabit would be nice but fast is ok)
- hardware wireless on/off switch
- usb port for shared flash drive storage
* as reliable as my old Dynalink RTA1025w

Does anyone know? any inputs appreciated!

Don't think i've ever seen a hardware wireless on/off switch.. But I believe TP-Link do that. I forget which model I have, but I use it just as an AP, it has all of the features you mentioned except the hardware wireless switch. Although I don't know how reliable it is as a modem/router. That's what the Cisco 877 is for ;)

You don't really want NAS functions (shared storage) running on a router because the router acts as a firewall, which is compromised by any vulnerability from the sharing. You might find some cheap NAS units around that can share a drive on ethernet, or just setup an old PC to share a folder.

Time to find a new industry!

Thanks for the responses. Yeah I do want just a bit of shared storage on the router. Whilst a NAS strictly technically, all I need it for is a few gigs of shared space on a flash drive say. My partner and I share a house, we both have laptops. "I left that file for you in the shared folder" is much more useful if it's not on a machine (that has to be powered on to access) and could be accessible from outside also. Having a space is better for version-ing than email things back and forth. The usage is so infrequent that it doesn't justify a NAS disk drive, or another machine running 24/7. We're not streaming media and have no plans to. We still listen to vinyl records!

Also, I'm interested in electricity efficiency.

I could set up a webdav folder on my website, but for those times when my sweetheart drops half a gig of photos in there for me to look through, it's not the best.

I could get one of those little USB NAS dongle things, but most user (non expert) reviews seem to suggest flakiness (and they are about $120).

Also, I'd like a switch to turn off the wifi. Yeah I can do it on the RTA thru the control panel. I dunno, I just think it would be useful.

I just thought that a combined modem / router / wifi (with hardware switch) and small shared storage would be.... useful. And a perfect for us! Where is my magic wand....

We just got Vodafone's wireless modem, and its got a Wifi switch, USB for printers/flashdrives (maybe usb HDD's)

Not gigabit though, But appears to have wireless N (don't have wireless N devices so can't test)

If you have to run heating in winter, you don’t own enough computers.
