Hi folks, I notice there are mentions of this issue on various forums, usually relating to Windows 7 and Vista. I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 and it's been working great...until recently. Suddenly I lose connection on that machine! At first I thought built-in NIC has died, but the new PCI NIC is not behaving any better. I tried different patch leads and ports to no avail. I even reinstalled the OS and still nada! I have also altered the local security policy so unidentified networks is automatically set as private network.

The only difference that happened recently is our USR modem + Linksys wifi ap combo was replaced by a single Linksys WAG160Nv2. The crazy thing is everything else still works just fine - all the other PCs on WiFi and our Bluray player on wired still work just fine and has full access to the Internet.

I'm at a loss on this - what else should I be checking for? I'm sure I've missed something...may well be something glaringly obvious!

FYI, this PC used to work just fine and has been a fantastic workhorse for a couple of years.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - if you're in ChCh there's a pint of your choice in it for you!

go to DOS and type in "ipconfig", and post the results. Also, does your linksys show the port this machine is plugged into being up? There should be a light goes on when you plug in the LAN cable. Try plugging in the cable to other ports on the modem and check the plug is fully in. Your computer should also show the network status.

Since you connect with a patch lead, does it mean your modem is close to the PC? Is the patch cable straight or crossover? Have you checked the cable on a LAN tester?

Time to find a new industry!
