Hi all,
New project...

How do i:

-Assign a certain amount of bandwidth to each IP on a LAN

-That throttles the bandwidth speed of that IP if the specified amount of bandwidth is exceeded.

-That resets the bandwidth count each month.

Prefer a hardware solution i can install after my ADSL router, maybe some sort of switch/router?
I've heard rumors of some sort of Linksys router with a tomato rubbed on it???

Not too expensive please, its just to manage flatmates and family.

Find a router you can flash with OpenWRT, it has packages you can use to control access.

What ADSL modem/router do you have now?

Getting a Linksys WRT54GL ($120ish) then flashing it with open source third party firmware that has the features you need is still the best option for this imo.

There are a number of different firmware options (Tomato, DD-WRT, OpenWRT etc).

From your requirements I think gargoyle-router (based on OpenWRT) is the best option for your needs, it supports static dhcp and quotas:

Here's another discussion about the same thing. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=69847 It's an increasingly common problem. Easily solved and cheaply too. See second to last past for a very easy non-Geek solution.  It does exactly what you described - monthly limit, renewed.  It does other tricks too such as enabling selling your internet to neighbours.

[I have an interest in Zenbu so this is not a totally unbiased comment]
