Hi there,

I am looking at bringing to NZ a Billion 7800NL. It has a Broadcom chipset but was wondering how it might go with the Caninets in NZ.

Had a read here http://www.geekzone.co.nz/sbiddle/7113 and it appears the Cabinets are using Alcatel equipment. If this is the case are the Broadcom chipsets compatiable?

If its ADSL or ADSL2+ compatible then it should work. There are some minor issues among a few different manufacturers but for the most part these are fairly isolated cases with certain models.

ADSL and ADSL2+ are the base standards that the chipsets follow.

Just be aware that Telepermit requirements still exist for xDSL modems and that it is technically illegal to connect a non Telepermitted device to the Telecom network.

Other than what Steve says on Telepermit it should be fine. Be aware that the Alcatel ISAMs in NZ have some line cards (some have all) with IKanos chipsets not Broadcom, these support VDSL2. That said I have not seen any evidence of issues with Broadcom CPE on IKANOS CO.

Hi, I would not lose sleep over it, from a safety perspective the modem is identical to ones sold in Oz and been through an identical safety check to get an A-tick. From a compatibility perspective, again its the same as any other Broadcom powered modem, although Telepermit does mean its been tested to meet certain performance standards when tested on Telecoms test DSLAMs, so your on your own if it fails to make the grade.

Technically it is not illegal - but you will be breaking your contract as telecom only allows telepermitted devices to connect to their network. And their network is becoming more and more confusing for some as when you connect a broadband modem, you might not be connecting to their network at all - the copper pair could just go to a DSLAM and a voip ATA that is owned by another ISP.

I think the worse that could happen would be causing cross talk interference with other nearby copper pairs if thats the case. But if you use the common standard based equipment then it should be fine.
