Hello,

I have recently moved and at the previous location I was connected to the internet with the TelstraClear cable package but the new area I'm in isn't in the cable area. So I have had to switch back to broadband via the telephone cable. In my old house the cable modem connected to a Linksys wireless router which was then connected to a PC via a cable and two laptops and a ipod touch wirelessly. I wouldn't say that set up was without problems but it did work.

Now at the new place I'm using a Netgear wirless modem/router and I am having nothing but problems. A PC running XP connected via a cable works fine and so does one of the laptops (running XP). However the other laptop (running Win7) and the ipod touch (generation 2) can see the network but everytime I enter the key it says that it is unable to connect.

I have tried resetting the router, updated the firmware on the router, changed the name of the network, changed the key, changed the security method (currently using WPA), changed the frequency; and I am at a complete loss as to what to try now.

- Router: Netgear Wireless Modem/Router DG834G v3

These wont connect:
- Laptop: Compaq Presario CQ61 Notebook PC, Windows 7 Home Premium, Dual Core, 2GB RAM
- iPod: iPod Touch 2G

This will connect:
- Laptop: Acer Aspire 5635WLMi, Windows XP MCE SP3, Dual Core, 4GB RAM

I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Cheers,

Andrew

Hi Andrew, welcome to Geekzone, firstly have you tried without encryption. Its not the first time that I have found devices that simply will not connect with various APs and it comes down to WPA issues, so first try get them running without encryption, then bring it back on.

So all of the devices ( that are capable) can connect via a patch cable to the router? but some of them cannot connect via wireless? ( or does nothing connect via wireless?)

Can the devices that connect via cable connect via wireless? or is it only some of devices you are having wireless trouble with?

Hi Cyril, thanks. I have since tried without any encryption and both devices still won't connect. I even powered down the router and tried that way.

wellygary, both laptops will work when connected with a network cable; but only the XP laptop can connect to the modem/router wirelessly, the Win7 one can't connect wirelessly.

So the PC works fine, one laptop works both ways and one laptop only works with a cable. The iPod is just a side issue but can't connect wirelessly either. My main concern is my wife's laptop (Win7).

What wireless modes have you enabled on the AP, b, g or mix of both.

Have you previously used this router with the old (cable) aconfiguration on the windows 7 Laptop? My advice would be to remove all networks from the "Manage Wireless Networks" on the Win 7 laptop and try reconnecting again.

Didn't even think of that, disabled the list and now the devices can connect! Champion. Thanks for your help guys Cool

As an aside the router is running mixed and the router does have the latest firmware update.
