I'm trying to find out what the max legal wattage of wifi gear is in NZ - does anybody out there know?

That is EIRP. Transmitted power into the antenna is not supposed to exceed 1Watt.

No word when Ingrams will have these in NZ at the moment, they can't make enough WIP300's to meet demand and the 330 isn't yet available.

UPDATE: Just checked and there are WIP300's available on ebay USA, US$249 + approx $39 shipping to NZ.

I think you need to buy one Mauricio, I'll come around and set your Asterisk PBX up for you! :-)

If you want one for public hotspots the WIP330 is the only real option. I've just been reading up about both of them and the WIP300 supports WEP and WPA and multiple profiles for differnet networks but has no browser interface so is no good if you have http authentication like many hotspots. The WIP330 runs on Windows CE so has a built in web browser as well so is fine for entering a login / password via HTTP

Sounds like a plan. You really need sombody in Wellington to test one anyway as the CafeNet network is the perfect place to test such a device! :-)

We reported about FON here at launch, but after reading some stuff there is only one conclusion: free Wi-Fi? Yeah, right.

It was a great marketing campaign. People join and to be able to use free Wi-Fi in other places they have to provide the same level of service. For that they have to purchase a specific brand and router model, or update the firmware of existing ones (again of that specific brand and model).

Whoever wants to access this, but is not currently sharing their own Access Points will have to pay for access.

In reality, the service will probably provide free Wi-Fi for a minority, and charge lots for the others. This was also explored on Wi-Fi Networking News.

Also, in New Zealand people would be paying for any excess traffic, and I think most ISPs don't allow sharing the connection anyway.
