Heyas, my first post and it's to ask for help :)

I just recently moved flat and brought my router with me.  My last flat had a TCL cable connection, as does my new flat, both belonging to different people (head tenants, feh).  The new flat's router is some crappy second hand D-link piece of crap that drops connection all the time, so my Linksys WRT54GL is here to the rescue! :D

Unfortunately, it seems that it's not quite that simple.  After plugging everything in and reconfiguring the router to use the new TCL connection settings, the intarwebs are unusable.  Now, I can feel my way around a network, but I'm no god, so here's the list of stuffs I did.

- Plugged the stupid surfboard modem (why make something light and vertical that plugs into a massive heavy coaxial?) into the router's Internet port and my PC's ethernet cable into a regular ol' switch port on the back of it.  'Internet' router status light blinks away, indicating that the router and modem can communicate just fine.

- Brought up my router's config page and changed its Static IP settings from the old IP/subnet/gateway to the new settings, as farmed from the old router.  While I was there, I changed the wireless network's name/pass to match the old, for the flat's convenience.  New settings show up in router's status page.  Restarted both modem and router for good measure.

- Everything shows up: router, both physically (ethernet) and wirelessly.  Other PCs on the network.  My PC in the router's connectivity list.  No-go on the internet.  HOW CAN I VIEW MY LOLCATS NAOOOO

- Win7's network center gives the skinny: PC connected via both ethernet and wireless to the router, grey line with X in the middle between router and globe representing the internet.  Diagnostics are useless as always: "idk, restart your modem or contact someone who actually knows lol".  By the way, I've been restarting both the modem and router quite a bit.

- After surfing around the router's settings, I come up with a blank.  Everything should work.  The IP settings are correct, I think.  There's nothing stupid enabled like DMZ or w/e that wasn't already working with the old TCL connection settings.  I perform a few stupid tests, like punching in a random IP and seeing if the derpboard modem still connects (it does, so I figure it'll connect no matter what and the router is the pimp in the relationship).  Disconnecting the modem from the router, to see if the connectivity lights dim (they do, on both modem and router).  Restarting everything a bajillion times.  Changing the router's IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1, because that's what the old router used.  Its status page plays dumb, listing only the settings; it doesn't actually test to see if they work.

SOME good turn of event eventually happened: I Plugged my ethernet cable straight into the modem, configured the IPv4 LAN settings to use the TCL IPs.  Didn't work until I severed the wireless connection to the router, but after that, peachy.  I'm typing this on the connection as I.. type.  So I can verify the ip/gateway/blah are correct.

Ideas?  This router is fairly new, worked 100% perfectly at my old flat, hasn't been banged around or anything and has never failed me until now, so I'm fairly sure I'm just doing something stupid.

Hi, so if you reconnect the new router but with the Wireless turned off (ie using lan cable only) does it work?

It should be a fairly simple process. Most people become unstuck because they don't power cycle the cable modem after swapping out a router. Since the cable modem only acts as a layer 2 bridge it needs a power cycle to learn the new MAC address.

A frayed knot.  Wired, wireless, both, doesn't matter.  Swapped out the ethernet cable between the router and modem, no dice.

Doesn't seem to be my PC, as my macbook has the same problem.

I've tried everything I can possibly think of, so here's information overload.  Don't worry there's pix! :D

Various connection configurations...
Wired:

Wireless:

Both:

^-- shows the layout quite nicely I think, though it omitts the modem.

For reference, this is what media center looks like when it works (directly hooked up to the modem):

Changed router settings:

Ipconfig, if it helps (doubt it)... lots of random devices, possibly from my attempts to get things working, idk.

It's been cycled probably a dozen times by now.

Hi Tom, in the router along with the Wan IP address and gateway did you put the DNS servers info in, can you ping say www.clear.net.nz and if not can you ping 203.97.37.85

Cyril

Edit and DNS settings should be 203.96.152.4 and 203.96.152.12

Either set of DNS servers don't work with the router (I've been using the 203.97.78.43/203.97.78.44 set when directly connecting to the modem so they work).

Pinging clear.net.nz doesn't resolve the host name.

Pinging 203.97.37.85 returns destination host unreachable.

I can't ping my gateway, either (destination host unreachable).

When directly connected to the modem, all of these pings work and the internet is in full swing.

You should be using 255.255.255.0 as the subnet

If that's the problem, then I'm going to punch you.  And then hug you to death.  Bring on the lawsuits.

I copy-pasted the old router's info into a .txt for later reference: Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0.  But then, it was a really fecalmattery router, so let's give this a whirl!

edit: really?  no swear words? :(

No dice.

I use 255.0.0.0 to connect directly via modem, so I should have seen it coming. Still, getting desperate and it was worth a try.

255.255.255.0 / 255.0.0.0 won't be the magic fix but if you understand subnets you should be using 255.255.255.0 which is correct.

It could potentially be an ARP table issue on the TCL network. How long was it between using the router on the old modem and the new one?

It was brought over from my old flat this morning (it would have been in use in over there this morning, too) and immediately plugged in when it arrived here.  What's this then?

Hi, what Steve is getting at is that arp tables may still be holding the the WAN port MAC address to your old IP.

MAC address - check. IP - check. WAN - check.

ARP? Some sort of puppy protocol.

When would this table flush/reset/whatever it does? Is it possible to flush it (without ringing the bastards, 80 minute wait this morning to be told "lol we dont support routers" as if it was absurd to think they would)?

Furthermore, not understanding the specifics (or generics for that matter) of arp - is this likely to be the cause, given that both my macbook and PC can be connected to the modem directly and share 'net to the flat over their wireless adaptors without a hitch?

Could be an ARP issue but I've never seen this actually happen. The issue will occur if you actually move a cable modem netween nodes.

There is nothing TCL can do, you'll just have to wait until the ARP cache flushes, odds are this is probably somewhere in the vicinity of a few days.
