Just wondering if anyone knows where to buy cat5 cable with a messaging wire / straining wire for hanging on telephone poles like telecom uses for their above ground telephone cable.

I'm not familiar with that application but what you are describing sounds a lot like STP (sheilded cat5/cat5e).

Dynamix make it and sell it preconfigured or in rolls.

Hi fahrenheit, a messaging wire is a tough steel bearer that is Siamese'd to the actual cat5 cable to offer a mechanical caternary cable just like an overhead drop wire that telecom would use but rated cat5 not 3.

Ray, if you find some tell me, I dont believe I have seen any here at all, I normally just drop a seperate caternary and pib tape of cable tie the outdoor cat5 to it, ok for shorter drops, pain for longer ones. I guess for longer ones you could cable tie a 16mm conduit to the caternary, not as aesthetic but probably supports the cable better.

Ah I see. I can imagine that is indeed difficult to source.

I had to run a cat5 cable across to another building 70m away. I have done this a few times before but its just so much of a pain having to use cable ties to attach the cat5 to fence wire that doesnt want to behave and is curling around all over the yard getting tangled.

So i thought maybe it would just be easier to get a cat5 cable with a messenger wire.

I wonder if even just the telephone 4 core stuff would be cat5 rated and usable since we only need 4 wires for ethernet? Probably not.

I work in Indonesia, the Cat 5 outdoor product, with messenger wire is definitely available, manufactured under the AmpConnect banner.
You could talk to the Aussie / NZ AmpConnect offices to see if it is available in NZ.

Since the two pairs in phone cable are twisted pairs you can run ethernet over it in half-duplex mode. However speed is horrible and 70m might be too long for any signal at all

That would be "messenger wire"? Like catenary wire...

2-pair Cat.5e phone cable is available and quite ok for 100base-TX Ethernet, I bought a 100m box of it the other day but you would need to check if available in black for UV resistance. I guess 2-pair cable would allow a lighter messenger wire. EDIT: that was normal homelan tough...

Did anyone manage to find an NZ supplier? It's going to cost me NZ$750 for a 305m roll landed in NZ from the USA.

I've recently done some jobs where I've run fence wire and outdoor Cat5e overhead inside 15mm alkathene pipe (the fence wire was anchored at each end). It's way faster than cable tieing the cable to the fence wire every 10cm but gets expensive for long runs.

Alternative would be standard phone wire, then an Ethernet over VDSL extender. That will give you a steady 100Mbps between the two points. Though if you are planning on running PoE over this run, then back to plan A :)

Is running a seperate steel wire with an outdoor rated cat5 cable and some kind of clips too dodgy?

No, totally acceptable.  I normally run some fence wire (high tensile galvanised steel wire) and cable tie some Ubiquiti Toughcable carrier (Outdoor rated shieled cat5e).  You use a lot of cable ties - I normally aim for every 100mm.  I use Black, UV stabilized cable ties and have a three year old installation which looks like it would get at least three more years before it needs replacing.

The overhead pipe method is really quick, but there is a lot of weight in it for long runs so I only use it for runs less than 15m.

Would be really good to find an NZ supplier for the cable with messenger.  Failing that, metal clips

If you've log a long overhead run it's incredibly time consuming to cable tie the cable to the catenary wire.

I'd suggest getting in touch with General Cable and seeing if they have anything suitable - the more I think about it, the more I reckon you could probably get an ethernet connection to stand over standard aerial cable, although I don't know how fast you'd be able to get it to run. I might have to fish a bit of 4-pair out and terminate it to Ethernet to test the idea out.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Cable tie and cat wire is your only option I am quite sure. Massive pain in the butt putting all the zip ties on but what are apprentices for right?
