In response to this very old question by myself and the ever looming threat of total Internet control by the world's superpowers, I have created a free DDNS service in New Zealand.

Here is the blog describing how, where, when and the terms of use: http://www.arcainsula.co.nz/2011/01/free-dynamic-dns/

Here is the login/register page: https://ddns.arcainsula.co.nz/

First off, no losers or pirates. If we find the service is being used to dole out poor taste, we will delete the account and reserve the domain names forever.

Working email address is required and you accept one email per month from us with information about our company as well as usage stats, service availability updates etc.

Limit of 10 names per email.

The client allows you to decide how the names are resolved - fixed, internal or LAN connection or web based.

Works well with Windows and Linux.

Redundant service with good backup and duty cycle.

Have fun.

Hi.

I ran this DDNS for about a year and picked up about 20 clients on the 'free' plan. But towards the end of the year, I noticed that people weren't using it anymore - their clients went 'quiet'. At that time, there were some international services that started to have free plans again and my kids started to chew up my free time. I've noticed the big DDNS guys are charging again or have simple restrictions so, if there is a need for this type of service in NZ, leave a message here and if the demand picks up, I'll reinstate it.

As I don't own a license for the software anymore, I'll have to ask for a one time fee of $9.99 per account (IP Address or login) to cover costs - this is cheaper than your ISP charges - normally about $5/mo for a fixed IP. This $9.99 will give you a years access with an many available aliases as you wish to a single dynamic IP that is in the domain of the DDNS service.

For a custom domain, please pm me the domain name details (who owns it, where is it hosted).

I can reinstate the service if I get 10 or more paying takers - if there is more than 20, I'll add a redundant server and make some service level agreements or uptime gaurantees. I'll also add some unique features to the first 20, like tight TTL or maybe an MX record, just ask, we can work something out as I own the DNS servers, they are based in NZ and I have over 20 years of infrastructure services experience.

Leve a message here and any other services you would like to see hosted in NZ that are unique, I'm happy to oblige if costs are covered.

Cheers

Gund
