Hey,
I have been getting these really annoying Lag Spikes that happens every 5-15 minutes.
For example,
When I am playing an online game, every 5-15 minutes, it would lag spike 3 times.
When it happens to me, it happens to everyone using my modem.
I have the thomson TG585v7 modem.

It doesn't just happen for gaming, but it also happens to other things on the internet, for example: Skype calling. Every 5-15 minutes, the person I am chatting to, will get cut off 3 times.

Each lag spikes stays for about 1 second.

No, my internet is not capped.

My ISP is Telecom NZ

MY PC SPECS:
intel i7 960 @3.2ghz
NVIDIA GTX 460 768MB
6 GB RAM
Windows 7 Enterprise

Please help, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Turn off the bittorrent and see if it still happens?

Time to find a new industry!

I guess you have already tested this with all other PCs turned off and checked that your PC has enough memory. Does your modem show lots of CRC errors or anything? If so, ask your ISP to get interleaving switched on. Last resort would be to try a different modem on your connection compared to your modem on a friends connection.

How long is the DHCP lease your laptop's been given?
It could be futzing around before it finally renews the lease, causing a small outage?

First thing to try is a different router if you can.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

I had Interleaving turned on before, but then I emailed them about the lag spikes I have been having. They told me to turn off interleaving, so I asked if they could turn it off. So they did.
They said Interleaving off is good for gamers like me, so I turned it off.

A few weeks ago, I changed my router, and it still happened.

If you're on ADSL2 G.992.5 or G.992.3 try changing your modem ADSL settings to G992.1 and then see if it becomes stable again. You'll be reduced to ADSL speeds but at least you can then isolate the problem.

Could be a modem or line fault if you're sure nothing on your side (cabling etc) is causing it.

How do I check if I am on ADSL2 G.992.5?

Go into your modem settings page and look for a section called ADSL or something like that.  It might be already set to Automatic, in which set it manually.

Mine is G.992.5 annex A, but I can't find a setting where it would let me change it.

It will be under something like "Modem" or "Modulation".

I would try to get the ADSL stats first and tell us if there are any CRC errors, along with the attenuation and noise margins. The interleaving fixes errors, but you may be having other issues like the previously mentioned DHCP or fluctuating noise margins if the interleaving made no difference.

Sorry, I cannot see anything like Modem or Modulation.
Sorry for being too newbie, I am new to all this internet thing. I only know stuff about computers. How do I check all those things you just told me?

The first suspect imo is the modem/router. Can you borrow a friends modem/router to try and see if you get the same issue?

There seem to be alot of reports of issues with the Thomson's Telecom gives out.
