Hi all,

Today I have received my 2Wire gateway from TradeMe as I was having wireless issues with my previous Thomson Tg585 router, Telecom however advised me that the 2wire would have stronger wireless. However this doesnt seem to be the case as my iPod and laptop are still not picking up wireless from the other end of house. I want to know if it is possible to use my Thomson router as a "wireless booster or extender etc" by plugging it in down the other end of the house. Will this work?? Or is there a way to boost 2Wire's signal without moving the router.

pretty sure you can only have one router plugged in at a time via phone line/ADSL. but if you can plug it in to the other router you can use it as an extender(needs LONG ethernet cable or if you have cables through the walls then you can).

make sure you set the IP range as the same on both routers otherwise you may get IP conflicts

TG585 works fine as an access point, but it needs to have a cabled ethernet connection to do this. It can't work as a repeater which is what you're presumably wanting.

Hi there,

An access pint would be fine but im actually wondering how to do it, as in changing setting etc. How can i access the Tg585 router when its connected to the 2wire?

Off the top of my head i cant remember exactly how to do it but the process is as follows:

1) Reset both the old and the new router
2) Plug your computer into the new router - note the gateway address you are assigned. (A)
3) Reboot and plug your computer into the old router - note the gateway address you are assigned. (B)

Open up the config page by going to http://gatewayaddress - while plugged into old router
Go to the LAN config page
Set the LAN IP address to be at the opposite end of the subnet
So if
A= 10.1.1.1, Old router ip address is 10.1.1.254
A= 10.1.1.254, Old router ip address is 10.1.1.1
A= 192.168.1.1, Old router ip address is 192.168.1.254
A= 192.168.1.254, Old router ip address is 192.168.1.1

Also make sure they are in the same subnet which will either be 255.0.0.0 or 255.255.255.0

In the old router, switch off DHCP so it does not assign addresses to computers on your network. Your new router will do this.

Configure the AP wireless settings

Save and Apply.

4) Plug the old router's LAN port 1 into the LAN port 1 of the new router
5) Reboot your computer and plug it into a lan port on any device
The computer should recieve an ip address from the new router
Go to the http://newgatewayaddress (A)
Configure the DSL ppp username / password to connect it to the internet
Configure the Wireless settings with the same network name (SSID) and WPA passkey as the old router.
Your computer will then be able to connect wirelessly to the signal it recieves best, and roam between them. Because they are connected to the same physical LAN it will always use the new modem which issues the ip addresses and gateway information.

You can find out what ip, subnet and gateway is being assigned to you by going start > run > type cmd and then into the command prompt window type ipconfig and press enter.
