Hi there

We have a Mac Mini that is now constantly waking up within a minute or two of being put to sleep; it then never goes back to sleep despite being set to do so after 20 minutes (I also hear a connected external hard drive spinning up again on a regular basis, indicating the Mac has received a wakeup signal of some kind).

I am desperately searching for some assistance for this problem as it's driving me crazy!

A few pertinent details:

  • the Mac is set to wake on LAN (we have a Squeezebox Duet attached); I'd imagine the problem could be fixed by turning this off, but we need the ability for the Mac to be woken by the Squeezebox

  • the Mac and Squeezebox are connected by network cables to a Netgear wireless router, which is in turn connected to an Asus modem/router at the other end of the house

  • previously the Mac and Squeezebox were connected to the network by a bog-standard network switch; up until the replacement of the switch with the router we had no such issues of the Mac being woken

  • the connection of the problem to the router (or something on the network) can be shown by it not happening when the Mac is not plugged into the router!

  • upon resetting and re-configuring the Netgear router the problem went away for a while, but returned about a day later.

My knowledge of networking is minimal, so any help to assist me work out what the problem is here and how to fix it would be gratefully appreciated. I have set up the Netgear router to the best of my ability, and have it working successfully both wired and wirelessly (although, once the settings are made to the router, eg turning off DHCP, I can't access the browser interface - should this be the case?).

Many thanks
Jonathan

If you think the problem is with the MacMini you could try trashing the com.apple.Autowake.plist which is found in the top level Library SystemConfiguration folder and then restart and reset the Energy Saver System Preferences.  You will need administrator access to do this.  Another avenue to investigate is to reset Power Management.  How and when to do this varies according to whether your MacMini is Power PC or Intel and I suggest you refer to the Apple Knowledge Base web site for directions about that.
