I'm not sure if this this is the right forum or not but it covers different platforms etc.

Anyway is it possible to get emails from an ISP (slingshot) account to download and send from two different devices, one being a windows vista laptop and the other being an iPad.

Cheers

I don't know if slingshot do IMAP, if they do, use IMAP.
If they only do POP3, make sure you turn off "delete emails off server when read" on both the devices. Be aware you'll have to go through and delete them off the server eventually, if you have a mail qouta.

It looks like Slingshot offer IMAP.

There's a help page on it here

IMAP for the win. Some ISPs are stuck in the 90s with only offering pop3 which is totally unsuitable for multiple devices.

I would suggest taking this opportunity to move from an ISP address to something like google apps with your own domain name.

The problem with IMAP is that you will find yourself using the storage up quickly. The best bet would be getting a domain name .com/.co.nz and then its yours for life, whether you change from slingshot or not! From their sign up to personal version of google apps and you have a massive inbox with your own domain name. I have emails coming to my laptop, PC and Ipad, a bit annoying if its a week before using a device as it loads all of the emails

Move all your emails account to be managed by Google, you can then have webmail/imap/activesync to view them all.

I find that email host limits are not a problem, its outlook starting to run badly with that many emails in one place that is the limit. Cant really have more than about 2000 in a folder before outlook becomes annoying to navigate.

I just set up gmails to archive to by drag and drop in outlook to move to gmail over imap when I get about a months worth in the mail host's inbox.

For anyone who doesn't do IMAP you can also set in most mail clients to leave a copy of the message on the server for POP3, It's nasty but it works (until a client forgets this option and downloads them all)

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

If they support IMAP, yes. Otherwise it's a hassle.

But if you use GMail.....then problem solved.

The problem is there does need to be ONE baseline client who does clear the mail frequently....or you spend an ever-growing amount of time dragging the same stuff down over and over on various systems.

I gave up and went GMail 4 years ago....and it completely solved every email problem I had.....including SPAM.

Outlook has the option to remove from the server after X days which did the job when I was slumming it on an ISP POP3 mailbox.

Google apps all the way.

Domain name is $10 US per year. Problem solved.

Get your family name and you can set up to 50 different email addresses.

Hand them out to your family. Split the cost. If you manage to get 50 family members in it will cost them $0.20 per year each. This is USD of course so you will be at the mercy of the exchange rate.

Cheers!

1) Sign up and activate a gmail account
2) Setup imap access to your gmail account
3) Login to the gmail mailbox via the gmail.com web interface > Settings
Set up pop3 retrieval to your slingshot account.

You should then be able to use googles large amount of storage space, their imap service, and be able to retrieve your old slingshot mail automatically and have it come into your gmail inbox, without using up your much more limited space on the slingshot mail server.

Train your friends to send mail to your new gmail address.

Does Slingshot have a decent webmail interface? If so you could consider that. The advantage of that option over Google is some workplaces block access to Google Mail.

Thanks guys,  gone with the IMAP solution for now.

Once my HTPC drives get full I'm going to buy a server/nas so I'll look at better solutions then including buying a domain name.
