We have a Thomson B49B3A Router in our flat and our internet is provided by Orcon.

The trouble is, we are constantly losing connection with the screen *Thomson Gateway can not be connected, please turn off your router and restart* (or something along those lines anyway)

We have 5 of us using the router, with 2 using ethernet cables and the other 3 using wireless signals from their laptops.

One of my flatmates blames us wireless users on the connectivity problems but they still seem to exist when not all of us are using the network so I am lost for ideas (besides the idea that the router could be faulty, but it worked perfectly well last year)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, could you be a little more specific about the router model, I dont seem to remember that one. I presume this is an ADSL router and are you on a ULL or wholesale conneciton.

For ANY dsl problems where the modem is loosing the physical connection (login to the modem and look at the up/down speeds = 0 or nothing) then a noise check is the first thing.

To do a simple noise check - within minutes of loosing the connection
1) Call 0800 000 000 from a corded (not cordless) phone and listen to the automated woman speak
2) You should be able to hear her with reasonable quality. If you hear any background noise, clicks, popping, or buzzing sounds then unplug all telephones / sky recievers from the wall jacks. Leave your modem plugged in with just a filter and your corded phone in the same plug to see if the noise goes away.

3) If the noise is still there, switch off the modem while listening and see if the noise goes. If it does - replace your filer.
If the noise stays after switching off the modem, call your ISP and ask for a chorus tech to come out and test the line.



If there is no background noise then move on to other factors such as a person with p2p programs such as bit torrent that could be overloading the modem. If this is the case, it will keep the physical connection (up/down speeds stay) but it may loose its PPP connection - so you wont have an internet IP address or Gateway / DNS in your connection status page of your modem.
