I have recently bought a new PC and wireless modem router. I can't get it to connect to the internet, my ISP is Telecom (Xtra).

I don't know what my xtra username is, my email is rsjd@xtra.co.nz, but I think my username may have 'xadsl' in it. I also don't know what type of connection I should be using, as when I tried to set it up it had 5 choices.

So in short, I need a step by step guide to set up my modem router.

Thanks for any help I get.

The Belkin N300 is a router/wireless/switch,  it does not contain an ADSL modem itself like some other all in one units that do adsl modem/router/wireless/network switch.

So do you have an existing ADSL modem/router?  Probably a Thomson or DLink if you're on Telecom?

If not, you need an ADSL modem/router.
If so, your question is really how do how do I connect my two routers.

There are a couple of ways it can be done depending on what modem you have.

@Ragnor - not necessarily, belkin do both. The PlayMax I have is available in both router and adsl+router configurations (the latter is a bit more expensive, and I have it).

The first thing to do is verify that you have a modem-router, not just a plain router. If you have a modem-router, connect and configure it. Otherwise, as Ragnor said, you need to connect the WAN port on the Belkin to one of the ports on your existing unit.

Do you the OP have an Xbox 360? If so you may have issues with this router.

Cool

The username and password don't strictly matter for Telecom, they authenticate you by your line/port in the cabinet/exchange unlike other ISP's.

The Telecom supplied modems typically come with "user@xtrabb.co.nz" as the username and password.

As long as it's anything@xtra.co.nz or anything@xtrabb.co.nz it should work.

Just to add to what Ragnor has said as you did mention not knowing the connection type as well.

Connection PPPoA
Type VC-MUX
VCI/VPI 0/100
