Are there any Routers that will automatically reboot from a Disconnect.

I want to be able to connect to my computer from my cell phone 24 / 7 when I am away. I have a problem with random disconnects from my ADSL broadband. Is there a Router or better still a Modem Router that will sense an Internet disconnect and reestablish that lost connection automatically.

I would say all modern routers do this.  Certainly every one I have owned does this.  It might be worth checking the settings in your router for "reconnect on disconnect" a check box before heading off to the shops!

If an ADSL connection drops out, the modem (router) almost always reconnects.

If it doesn't check:

-If its the newest firmware for the modem, might be some bugs in the old one 
-Is the modem a reliable brand? It could be disconnecting on a modem error and not a ADSL error, hence the modem freeze?
-Is your configuration standard? No conflicting DHCP servers etc?
-And as above, check that it is set to reconnect.

If its an ISP's modem, ring them to sort it out, they might even send you another one.

Even the old ones usually reconnect automatically. Check your settings for something like "idle time to disconnect" or "connect on demand", which would disconnect your router if nobody is on the LAN at home. It should be changed to stay connected. You don't really want to reboot it unless its unstable, but I don't think any of them do that so I would say check whats the reason for it to drop the connection. You might be able to improve the ADSL line quality or put it onto a small UPS to absorb the power spikes. Are the modem's DSL stats good?

Qualified in business, certified in fibre, stuck in copper, have to keep going  ^_^

Its the Netgear DG834 Router Modem. Sadly I though I would upgrade the Flash. Now I own a brick.


What do I do now.. ?

Reding the Netgear site which details recovering your router if you brick it is probably a good idea

I have had many site visits where a modem reboot is all that was needed to regain internet. All different brands. The web interface works, the adsl sync is up but they wont connect the PPP, until they are rebooted.

My own USR 9106 that i have loved for years occasionally drops the PPP and wont reconnect until i reboot the modem.

So the only way I would guarantee a reboot or reconnect would be something like this
1) Using an X10 power plug switch, and this software running on your pc

2) A ping monitor program to test ping results to and after 10 failures in a row some can be configured to run a program. Your program or batch script or whatever could telnet into the modem and send a reboot command

3) Some hardware device like this plugged into your network

Great links raytaylor. In the future these rebooting and pinging tools would be a good option. I have bookmarked them


PS. I should have mentioned that my router did perform all other tasks as  normal. It is only the internet connection going down that was the problem.
