Guys

I've decided I need to upgrade to an 802.11n wireless router as my ancient Netgear doesn't cut the mustard anymore as wifi is poor.

Anyone got any recommendations? I'd like another all in one with ADSL2+ modem as well but have seen others say to avoid these.

Only use it for browsing so no requirement for video streaming/gaming

Opinions greatly received

My (biased) opinion if you want an all-in-one is something DrayTek, the cheapest option being the Vigor2710ne, reason being that few companies manage to get both ADSL and wireless right. My personal opinion is to avoid LevelOne and TP-Link ADSL gear, they're cheap for a reason.

I see Paradigm PCs stock these and they're based in Paraparaumu where I live so maybe I'll take a look, what's the basis of your recommendation for Draytek?

Just seen your employer, understand the biased bit now but still interested in why draytek?

Because they "just work". We rarely ever get returns on them, and whenever there has been a fault (such as a wireless issue we discovered with the 2710ne last year), DrayTek have sorted it out pretty quickly. I way buying and recommending DrayTek before I even worked here

They also release 10 or so different firmware versions tuned for particular ADSL DSLAMs, which is helpful for some people having problems with their lines.

And there's the knowledge that you can yell at me if you do have any problems!

Just to throw another option out there, my current 'go-to router' is the NetComm NB6Plus4Wn. Have recommended this one a number of times and they've always worked brilliantly.

But I do hear good things about the DrayTek mentioned by theEd also

By the way, as with all DrayTek's there is a Web Demo of the admin interface, so you can easily figure out if it'll do what you want it to:

i use the netgear dgn2000 , never had a problem with it , always seems to work and cant remember the last time the connection dropped.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Have a look at the TP-LINK TD-W8960N,

I have recommended it to heaps of people as a cheap all in one unit for home use with no major problems so far.

It uses a solid broadcom chipset that works well with Telecom line cards in the cabinets and exchanges.

It's also half the price of the Draytek 2710.

Thanks Ragnor, much as I like the Draytek the price of the TP-Link is definitely more like what I was looking at.

Your cheapest option would be to ask if your broadband provider will give you a free model if you re-sign for a twelve month contract. Otherwise I'd probably just get a cheap, new provider branded model from trademe, the telecom thomson TG585 v8 or the vodafone complete hg556a (or that tp-link one

). I've been using the vodafone complete and had zero issues with it, no point buying a better one for $200 odd if just using it for internet sharing and basic home networking, in my opinion..

Nice idea except that the Thomson one is only 802.11b&g which is what I've got already and I wanted an n compatible one as it gives better performance/range.

This is specifically around my Android handset as it seems a bit flaky using wirless which I'm now thinking is more down to router than phone having checked on this and XDA forum

I'll second the TP-link TD8960N it is what I replaced my Netgear 834N with :-)

Works great, and has a nice tweakable setup ... they expose a lot of the Linuxy bits for you to play with.

Not sure about the Vodafone unit but the Telecom supplied Thomson's seem to have a fair amount people complaining about them.

I haven't used the telecom thomson, the latest V8 version of it is wireless-n though (I've got mine listed on trademe, unopened, but not having any luck flogging it for $60

). The TP-Link for $99 looks a great deal.

OK, I've taken the plunge and bought the TP-Link one.

Anyone in Wellington area want the old Netgear DG384 (v2) as I won't need 2, can bring it to town or I live on the Kapiti Coast?
