Hey

I got this router to replace the old tg585v7 and for most things it seems solid however I cannot get my PS3 into DMZ with it which is what I bought it for in the first place.

I'm sure there must be some other PS3 users around with this router since it seems a pretty popular model, does anyone manage to get their games to show "Open" as oppose to "Moderate" with this router?

I've tried wired and wireless connections, with UPnP enabled and disabled, using the default settings, setting up a static IP and putting it into DMZ, manually doing the port forwarding... Whatever I try just constantly returns a "Moderate" firewall status with a message that my router may not support IP fragments which I gather is something to do with MTU settings however editing these values as suggested also has not had any effect.

If anyone could shed some light on this issue I would be eternally grateful! Have been banging my head against a wall trying to fix this for days now.

Im not entirely sure on console gaming, however setting the upnp in the router to enabled should allow it to work.

Upnp works by making the router discoverable. Then applications running on computers or devices upon the network can make requests to have specific ports forwarded to them.

Eg, a bit torrent program or msn messenger can make a request for port 6001 to be forwarded to the computer it is running on, while the ps2 can request other ports to be forwarded to it. The port forwarding requests can be renewed and time out.

The first step i would look at if this isnt working, is a firmware upgrade. See if the tp-link website has some new firmware you can download for the router.

Hi there,

I have this router, and I've found that the port forwarding (and probably the DMZ) does not work unless the routers DHCP service assigns the IP address to your client .... so if you hard code an IP on the PS3 it won't work, but if you add an IP reservation into the DHCP server using the PS3s MAC address then it will work.

Bit of a quirk!

Ok thats good to know, would you be able to instruct me how to do this?

Am I right to assume that I add a static IP lease to the Playstation but on the Playstation I leave it set to automatic instead of manually entering the IP/Router/DNS? Also does the static IP need to be somewhere within the DHCP lease range?

Are you using this method with a PS3 or an XBOX? If so could you advise whether UPnP should be on or off?

Any kind of additional advice you could give would be hugely appreciated :)

I can put together a quick HowTo when I get home .. but you are on the right track.

I've not made any PS3 specific changes to my router it just works, I just leased an IP for it is all maybe that is all you need.

But if you do want to do the port forwarding, then go to www.portforward.com .. and follow the instructions on there, very good website :-)

I've not looked to be honest, will check it tonight.

Maybe just do the static IP lease first, leave everything else you've done alone and then see how it goes .. like I said before the port forwarding doesn't seem to work unless the router itself assigns you the IP.

The biggest thing I wanna know is whether anyone using this router can manage to get Open firewall status because if that doesn't seem possible I may as well give up and maybe buy a new router.

Have you tried this?

- Set the PS3 back to obtain ip address automatically via dhcp
- Remove any DMZ settings you've been trying (or even reset the modem/router to default settings and start from scratch)
- In the modem/router admin go to advanced > uPnP > Enable uPnP
- Save and reboot the modem/router
- Reboot the ps3

Do you still get moderate NAT after that?

Yes I've tried that too, still get the same IP fragments message and still only get "Moderate" firewall status in games.

Wow there are a lot of people who have the same issue across different brands of modem/router.

Ok so if the max MTU is 1492 in the modem/router, have you tried setting the same MTU size in the PS3... apparently the warning is due to the mismatch between what the ps3 is using and the router is using and the ps3 sucks at detecting the correct mtu.

Sounds like in the ps3 it's under: Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings (advanced settings) > MTU

Also, what ISP are you on?

I will try setting the MTU to that value in the playstation and report back. I did drop the MTU down before after using some technique to determine optimum MTU size. Had the router and the PS3 both manually set to 1464 IIRC and was still receiving this error (have never been able to get rid of it).

I am on NZNet.
