My Compaq x1030us laptop has built in Bluetooth capabilites. It is showing no local services whatsoever. Nothing happens when I try to add them either. Same goes for my COM ports. I have no idea what is going on.

Are using a Widcomm based stack? This symptom you're describing is associated with corrupt information in your user profile, maintained by Windows.

You can create a new user with Administrator rights, reboot and using this new user do the following: remove the Bluetooth software, reboot, install the software again, reboot.

Now log as your normal user and check the services. If there are services listed you'll ber able to use them, but you know that something is not 100% kosher with your Windows registry information.

Yes, I am using Widcomm. I created a new user to uninstall and reinstall Bluetooth, but that didn't solve the problem. Still no services showing up. My PDA (iPAQ 1945) can pick up another PDA, and vice versa, but my laptop is not showing up.

I've just solved the same problem. Hope it works for you.

WARNING - this is not simple. You do this at your own risk!

1) Create a new user (admin).
2) Log off.
3) Log on as the new user.
4) Uninstall WIDCOMM.
5) Reboot.
6) Log on as the new user.
7) Install WIDCOMM.
8) Go Start -> Run -> regedit.exe
9) In the right panel, select HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> WidComm
10) Go File -> Export and save this key to c:\bt.reg
11) log off
12) Log on as your normal user
13) Double click on c:\bt.reg. If this works, you're done. Otherwise, if you get an error like 'Could not access registry', keep reading.
14) Check your task scheduler service is running (if you don't know what I mean then it should be)
15) Open a command prompt and type "At 19:10 /Interactive cmd.exe". Replace 19:10 with a time in the near furture.
16) At the time you entered cmd.exe will run as the system user. Under Windows XP the window title is c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe. Go to this command windows and type 'regedit.exe'.
17) Find your user UID. In the registry editor, open the key HKER_USERS. Check each of the UIDs (the seemingly random mix of numbers and letters) in there until you find your user profile. To do this, open the 'Volatile Environment' key. The HOMEPATH setting should be 'c:\documents and setitings\'.
18) Open c:\bt.reg in notepad. Replace HKEY_CURRENT_USER with HKEY_USERS\.
19) Go to the copy of regedit you opened in step 16. Go file -> import. Import c:\bt.reg.
20) Done! You can delete bt.reg now. Reboot.

Worked for me - YMMV.

Check with your manufacturer and see if there's an update to 1.4.x.x - seems to avoid this problem.

The problem is that we recommend downloading files from the manufacturer. Patched files may also go to the border of copyright infringement, that's why I don't list these things here.

The installation routine in that page is for people trying to circumvent the distribution controls Widcomm put on their files. I know it probably fix some problems, but bear in mind these problems were probably there because of a corrupted profile information.

It's simple: Widcomm licences the stack to these companies. If other companies can simply distribute hardware and have someone's else software to run it, Widcomm will not make money. And with no money, they would probably stop the development of the best stack around.
