was advised by a technician regarding my tg585 modem to use a channel not in use.

problem is , I have no way of scanning my immediate area for which channels are being used already by wireless handsets and the like.

he further suggested that there is an Iphone application which does this nicely , and are eliminating all the channels that are in use , I maybe able to get better reception through-out the house on one that is not being occupied.

There aren't any - Apple banned them all. Try channels 1,6 and 11 as these are the only three channels that don't over lap.

Or just use your laptop, there are plenty of PC apps that do this.

In an urban environment 2.4GHz is very noisy these days. If you live in an apartment block it's pretty safe to say you will struggle to get really good performance these days.

If you have access to a WiFi laptop, then try a small bit of Windows freeware called WirelessNetView from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html

I have a laptop and will test the methods above right now.
