I recently got a UX50 Clie and want to sync with my laptop using bluetooth. I bought a D-Link DBT-120 Bluetooth USB adapter (Software WIDCOMM 1.4.1 Build 6) and installed it on my Dell Latitude C/610 which is running Windows 2000 Professional (Ver 5.00.2195 Service Pack 2). The installation appeared to go OK and the Device Manager finds the adapter and says that it is working properly. But when I try to further configure the adapter, I get the message "No local bluetooth device found." I don't get a bluetooth wireless network icon appearing in My Network Places. I know that is a problem but I don't know how to correct it. When I search for bluetooth devices, either from the PC to the Clie, or from the Clie to the PC, no devices are found.

Thanks for your help

Roger

Have you plugged the USB adapter before running the installation program?

I installed the software and drivers before plugging in the adapter. The installation manual says to do the software installation and when a screen appears saying plug in the adapter, plug it in and click OK. It also gives the option to click cancel and continue the installation without plugging in the adapter. I have done both with the same results. (As I followed the progress of the installation, I think that all drivers were installed before that screen appeared.) By the way, before I purchased the D-Link adapter, I tried a Belkin adapter and a IOGEAR adapter, both gave the same problem.

Another question then: is this USB device plugged directly to your computer or to a USB hub? If you're using a USB hub, please move the adapter to a direct connection.

If this is not the case, you can try a trick to see if this is a problem with your Windows information for this user: create a new user with Administrator rights, and always using this new user remove the drivers, reboot, reinstall, reboot. Check if it works now with the username you usually use.

I am part of a large corporate network which has very strict security. Our IT people do not provide support for bluetooth and so I am on my own. I am not knowledgeable about the workings of Windows and am not sure how to create a new, unregistered user on the corporate system and whether or not that could cause problems. A tech support person from one of the adapter manufacturers suggested that I may need a Windows update. I understand that the current version of Windows 2000 includes Service Pack 4. Are you aware of people having bluetooth problems with W2K versions that only have Service Pack 2?

Thanks for your help.

Roger

PS. The adapter is plugged into the primary USB port on the laptop.

I've used my TDK since I installed Windows 2000 SP1 and it worked ok. I don't think simply upgrading to SP4 would make things better, because SP4 doesn't add anything to this area.

Creating a new local user is not hard - providing your IT organisation does not inforce security policies in every computer, but again, this can be against your organisation's policies.

It does sound like a corrupt registry information, but this can only be fixed/analysed/checked if you have access to either creating a new user or having this machine rebuilt.

I got my Bluetooth device to work!! I was looking in the device manager and noticed that the Bluetooth Protocol Stack was not started. Also the startup type was set to boot whereas the other Bluetooth drivers were set to automatic. I started the protocol stack and switched the startup to automatic and my BT adapter became visible. I was able to do a hotsync with my Clie.

I'm still having a small confusing problem. When I start the computer with the adapter plugged in, I get the same problem as before "Device not found." However, if I remove it and replace it, or start the computer and then plug it in, everything appears fine. I hope things continue to work. Thanks for your help.
