My snap connection keeps going slow and dropping out, and before I get snap to get telecom on the case, I would really really like to make sure its not my stuff.

So far I have tried 2 netgear DG834G v4's (both of which have proven fine on my slingshot connection) and the flatmates netgear DGN2000 which proved itself fine on his old telecom connection (and he will probably want back soon too, if he gets rid of the orcon connection he has now) Also tried 3 line cables, the jackpoint is right beside the one that does the slingshot connection and they share a cable from there back to the POE, and share an aeiral cable to the pole down the driveway at which point they go into an underground cable along with the cables to all the neighbours houses and the cable to the flatmates bedroom, I have looked at all the cable I can under the house and up the side of the house for damage etc, and found none.

But they are all the same ADSL chip and firmware. I have a craptastic thompson which crashes all the time so not really ideal to see how stable a connection is, and I have a couple of other bottom tier routers that I have been given or aquired in boxes of computer junk - so again background unknown and another variable.

Before I risk a $270 charge from telecom/chorus/whoever I would like to put another proven good modem that isnt a netgear and isnt a broadcom chipset in it for a few days to see if its stable etc, so one that has proven itself, and has a working DMZ would be best.

Just speed tested now and got this..

Yet during the day I will get proper speeds on it usually, so I cant just throw one on there for a few mins and see if its good or not.

Those speeds make me quite sad :(

Just the standard (since somebody else will ask) - what's your Line Stats? Otherwise I have a Dlink Modem laying around somewhere you can borrow (except I am in Christchurch) - this was proven to be both craptastic but good since it had a Broadcom Chipset which synced at quite a nice speed compared to my Cisco 877.

i used the netgear dgn2000 router for my Snap connection and it was brilliant, i have switched to the fritz box and found that i can never sync more than 14000kbs, while the netgear routinely synced over 15000 kbs

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Try pickup a Dynalink RTA1320/RTA1320E/RTA1320v6 off trademe, e.g. http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/networking-modems/routers-firewalls/auction-411031088.htm

They can be routinely found for less than $10, and despite overheating issues in some of them, are great little modems. Mine synced at 18meg routinely, i believe it has a broadcom chip. At the price, they are useful to have lying around for diagnostics

I have a dynalink, unfortunately they lockup within about 60 mins of torrenting on them which makes faultfinding a little hard. The probelm is the connection will work fine for ages and then just totally flake out for a while.

In saying that its running like this right now:

Im about to take the laptop into the house and try it straight on the router without everything else, but iptraf is only showing the usual background <10kB/s before and after starting the speedtest.
