Greetings GZ community.

I am trying to telnet to my modem/router as suggested in a forum http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=73842&page_no=2 which i need to  telnet command voice set all enable as also stated in the forum.

I have entered into the telnet terminal window the following command: telnet 192.168.1.1
however it says the command is invalid.
I tried to just enter: voice set all enable but that command is also invalid.

can someone provide suggestions or alternatives, thanks in advance.

I am using Windows 7 operating system with the telnet from additional windows and features installation.

is that the exact error message or is it something else? Are you sure you have added the telnet client and not the telnet server in your turn windows features on and off?

Oh yes I added the telnet server in turn windows features on and off. That must be the problem. Do I download a client or is there already one on windows?

If you have a telnet client window open

i.e. you get a Telnet> prompt

you should type <open>  X.X.X.X  - remove <>

If we're talking Windows 7 - there's a telnet client in the same place as where you enabled telnet server - the "turn windows features on or off" area in Control Panel.  You don't need the server portion by the way, just the client.

Edit: Adding this...

Hey that worked :) or was it because i installed the server??? anyway thanks.

Now the password it is asking me for! is that my modem password? If so which password? there are two admin accounts on the VODAFONE hg556 modem.
Also I entered the wrong login details more than 3 times it said something about entering it wrong 3 times but i didn't take note, I just closed the screen.

Now I tried it again and it wont let me enter a password. any key I press won't work in the password field.
Did i do something wrong?

Close the window and start again? Restart the route if it doesn't work.

You only needed the Telnet client on your PC, not the server. Uninstall the Telnet server.

Have you tried typing the password and pressing enter? Many systems (especially *nix/BSD etc) wont show any reaction to a password being typed.

Sounds like your telnet issues are based around not knowing the commands to use telnet.

Ok i uninstalled the telnet server as suggested and also rebooted the router/modem.

I was able to enter a password on the first 3 tries, and the password field did display the asterix in the password filed when i typed the characters, but now after the first 3 login failures I done today it won't let me enter characters into the password field! Would it help if I uninstalled than reinstalled the telnet client?

putty is another telnet type of client (amongst other things). Probably just as easy to stick with the built in windows one for now.

Uninstalling the telnet client wont help you with the password lockout as its locked out on the router itself.

When you put a password into telnet it doesnt usually display the * characters, its just left blank. I would have thought (but dont know for sure) that resetting the router should reset the password count. Either that or it is reset after a period of time.

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

Putty is one of the leading windows ssh, telnet clients out there.  I simply provided you a link directly to the exe download file to save you pissing about with googleing the download page.

Just for the record, if you're unsure about a link on a web site then you shouldn't click it.  If you're unsure about a link on a GZ post then you should report it and one of the mods will check it for you.

As you can see, I don't have a trusted star under my name, so you should def to someone who does and not just randomly click on links.  If I did have a trusted star then you can make an assumption that the mods have looked over my posts often enough to decide if I'm likely to post something that would cause you more harm than good.... but this is the internet and it is a public open forum...  so come on :) :) :)
