So I'm going to setup a dd-wrt. I'm going to buy a ASUS RT-N16 for the router. I currently have a D-LINK DSL-G604T adsl router. Can I use this as the gateway for the ASUS? I presume I disable all but the adsl on the D-LINK and then somehow put it in bridge mode. Does this mean that the ASUS is setup with the ADSL username & password?

What ISP are you on?

Most ISP's for ADSL in NZ largely use PPPoA because they are using Telecom Wholesale to provide the service, you can not easily bridge PPPoA unlike PPPoE.

If you go into the D-LINK DSL-G604T admin in the WAN section, there should be a "WAN Setting" dropdown, is there an option for "half bridge" in there?

If there isn't you will probably need another modem/router that does do half bridge or full pppoa to pppoe bridging, their are two good ones I'd recommend:

TP Link TD 8840 does half bridge ~$60
Draytek Vigor 120 does full pppoa to pppoe bridging ~$120

Hi Ragnor

I'm with Xtra. I have a "Bridge Mode" selection, no Half-Bridge. If I select Bridge mode I can then choose 2 connection types - 1483 Bridged IP LLC and 1483 Bridged IP VC-mux.

I suppose I can just buy the router, try it with the d-link and if it does not work then buy a new modem.

Yeah those won't work for PPPoA, the Draytek is a good unit.
