Hi there im just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why . we currently live in Tuahiwi just before Rangiora Canterbury. There are 9 of us living in the hosue with 5 laptops ,1 IPad ,4iphones, 4 andriods, and 3 ipod touchs . During the day our internets ok but as soon as the kids arrive home it starts to stop connecting and we have to restart the modem around every 20mins .  maybe we need a better quality modem ie a business one that allows more connects. If anyone could help that would be soo much help Thanks heaps

Hi, guess the first question is what do you currently have as a router/modem. I assume at least some of the laptops are running torrents, maybe see if you stop those does the router stay up longer.

Hi, so thats just a router (if I am not mistaken) so do you have DSL or other (cable or WISP) internet service.

Cyril makes a good point about torrents.
If one person is downloading torrents, or has a torrent application set to start up automatically int he background on their computer, it can overload the NAT table within the router and basically stop it from opening new connections.

I havent heard of this happening on newer routers though - was a problem on the old dlink DSL-G604's but i can imagine it would be happening in this situation. You have many more internet devices than most households and so i would say its the NAT table overflowing.

Check if any of the computers run a torrent program such as
 - Vuze / Azureus
 - Utorrent
 - Limewire
 - Bearshare
 - Bit Torrent

If they do, open the programs, go to tools > Options and find the option
[X] Start when user logs on or
 [X] Start at windows startup
usually on the advanced tab - untick the option

Next find the connections option and set the global or max connections to be around the 50 mark.

See if that helps.

Just found your router on the vuze bad routers wiki
http://wiki.vuze.com/w/Bad_routers

Not for nat connections (though with that many computers its still a high possibility) but they list it for overheating.

A reboot can lower the processor speed inside it for long enough to bring the temperature down after 30 seconds while it starts up to run it again for another 20 mins before it overheats again or the nat table fills up again.

Hi, can totally concure with what Ray has said, I would suggest one of those laptops is running a torrent. The DIR-615 whilst not being the top of the pack is a good router (even on stock firmware) and not known for high simultaneous connection issues with torrents etc.

What does intrigue me, is are you using this as a wireless AP and also a router, is that intentional, is there another DSL router, I would not have thought the HFC network extends to that part of canterbury, so I assume you are on DSL rather than HFC or WISP, could you explain more about the connection and any other devices.

I have seen situations where double nat and high traffic demands gets the two routers in a tizz and similar failures.
