Hi all.

I just bought a Linksys WAG160N. I was hoping it would connect better to my xbox live via my Wireless N adapter connected to my xbox (I originally had a WAG200G).

What encapsulation type should I have it on if i'm using it for internet gaming? It's currently on PPPoA. Should it be on PPPoE?

Another problem I'm having (but not too important) is my download/upload speeds. After doing a few speedtest through speedtest.net and telecom's own speedtest, I was averaging a 85ms ping, 1.93 down and 0.55 up. Surely ADSL2+ should be achieving better standards?

Here's my router line stats:
SDownstream Rate:5238 Kbps
Upstream Rate:670 Kbps

Encapsulation:RFC 2364 PPPoA
Multiplexing:VC
QoS:UBR

Autodetect:Disable

Hi, those settings are correct and you should be using PPPoA not E. It would seem that your modem is only syncing at ADSL1 or very poorly if on ADSL2+. Along with the sync rates what line attenuation (both up and down ) and noise margins does it show.

They don't show up under Status -> DSL connection.

The other router I had, the WAG200G, is also ADSL2+ yet achieves the same line stats. I remember years ago trying to sort this out and someone mentioned my power profile at telecom or something, I'm on an ADSL2+ plan and my cabinet is ADSL2+ capable.

Hi, so also confirming what ISP are you on and are you on a LLU connection, I did see your earlier posts (mid 2008) and nothing seems to have changed, so just to confirm what we can could you PM me your address (or the neighbours if you want) so I can confirm from the Chorus site correctly.

I think it's worth pointing out that plugging in via Ethernet versus using the Wireless doesn't change anything speed-wise. I did a search and there's been problems with people's wireless speeds when using the latest version of firmware (2.00.20).

Hi, based on the past discussion and from the best info I can obtain from the Chorus SAT, it seems you are just past the edge of the VDSL2 coverage area of the exchange, and you are not on a cabinet. At worst case I cannot see you more than 1.5km of cable from the exchange. You line stats from 2008 indicated roughly 25dB downstream attenuation, yet as then and now you only get 6-7Mb/s, this is clearly very wrong.

I assume you have had you house wiring checked and have you ever done a full isolation test.

It quite possibly does come down to the house wiring. The local exchange isn't far from my house physically, i'd say about 600 - 800 meters, but who knows how long the actual copper length is.

As this is my parent's place, and they don't care at all about the speed as long as it is working, i'll think i'll just leave it here. When I head back down to Uni soon i'll take the router with me and see how it works out down in Welly.

WAG160N Emulator

Have you tried with the DSL Modulation set to "ADSL2+M"

The DSL up and downstream rates can be found in "DSL Connection" under Status.

If your WiFi peaks at around 2Mbps and the broadband connection gives you mobs more then downgrade the firmware version to 2.00.17

Old firmware can be found here if you can't locate it elsewhere.

Thanks for the post Dr. I didn't try the "ADSL2+ M" setting, but i'll use that when I set it up in my new flat.

Also thanks for that 2.00.17 link, I hear a lot of people had problems with 2.00.20.

What's the WAG160N Emulator for?

Hi again all, thought i'd repost here rather than start a new thread.

Anyway I put the WAG200G back in and saw there was a firmware update (was on 1.01.04) to download and now i'm running on 1.01.09.

After the upgrade however my stats have dropped a fair margin.

DSL Status:ConnectedDSL Modulation Mode:ADSL2+DSL Path Mode:InterleavedDownstream Rate:3898 kbpsUpstream Rate:722 kbpsDownstream Margin:12 dbUpstream Margin:12 dbDownstream Line Attenuation:30 dbUpstream Line Attenuation:6.5 dbDownstream Transmit Power:12 dbUpstream Transmit Power:19 db
Before the upgrade the downstrea, rate was around 6.8mbps and the upstream rate was slightly lower

One thing I noticed after the upgrade was the different modulation modes now available. There's:
Multimode
T1.413
G.dmt
G.lite
ADSL
ADSL2
ADSL2+
ADSL2 AnnexM
ADSL2+ AnnexM
ADSL2 AnnexL

Which one of these should I be on? I'm currently set to Multimode.

Hi, multimode is correct, however as mentioned earlier look at your house wiring, have you done a basic isolation test, is there a security system in the phone wiring (used/monitored or not) all the diagnostics you have give indicate either a house wiring issue.

I'm happy to be on the aforementioned ~6.5mbps speed so i'm not really bothered about going through the house wiring but what i'm trying to sort out is why a sudden loss of 3mpbs after a firmware upgrade? I guess i'll just go and downgrade it back to 1.01.05.

It may not be correct, but I'm sure one of them doubled the throughput and I'm almost sure it was an ADSL2 variant.
This was on a WAG160N.

It was a while ago and I just remember saying at the time, "Look see, it's not set to ADSL2" and then bing it went from 6Mbps to 12Mbps.

Still had crap WiFi until I figured out the firmware issue,

So wondering if a WAG200G is the same in it's setting.

As cyril7 mentioned the recommended setting is 'multimode' but if an ADSL2 setting doubles your bandwidth... why not.

Someone suggested "try SCE to 'Aux'" once and that turned out OK.
