Hi all,

Have been using Strong VPN but the speeds are a bit crap which means renting movies from the US itunes store results in an hour or so of downloading before I can watch. Also makes trying to watch the previews a stop start buffer affair.

Netflix is ok but there is a bit of blurring in HD content, not sure if its bandwidth or just bad compression?

I'm using an apple tv2 with a DD-WRT router for PPTP VPN.

Is it possible to have a VPN fast enough to provide a good level of speed? Or is this just something I have to live with?

http://unblock-us.com/ works well for me, hardly any buffering or artifacting on Netflix when I'm watching. Also works for iPlayer, etc.

I use Astrill. Works great with DD-WRT and Tomato firmware as well. Many servers around the world selection to choose from using the desktop software or the DD-WRT, Tomato integration.

Astrill is great too, access to heaps of VPN locations. I use it for geolocked Linux ISOs via the desktop app.

I am at work so cannot connect to Astrill via here to do speedtests but I watch HD shows on both Hulu Plus and Netflix from home. Will do some tonight or maybe someone else can post them too. Quite a few members at GZ now use Astrill.

Astrill seems to be a bit faster than WiTopia, but every time I accessed my Amazon account while connected to Astrill I immediately got an email from Amazon saying my account was locked, suspected of having been the victim of a phishing scam.

I think Astrill's IP addresses have been blacklisted by Amazon. Never had this problem with WiTopia.

This is a speedtest to LA, through Astrill:

Astrill Speedtest

(for reference, this is our ADSL speed to a NZ server)

Apeedtest NZ

I can't complain to much about Astrill speeds :)

I use Asus RT-N16 with Astrill's version of Tomato loaded on to this model router. All 4 ports are gigabit, wireless N, USB port for printer/HDD sharing and performance is great.

Astill is a good service, speeds have never been an issue. You notice a little bit more latency than using a naked TCL broadband connection, but otherwise speeds seem very good.

Here's a few speed tests I just did.

Auckland WorldExchange (this is line speed)

San Jose CA Internode no VPN

When browsing local websites (GZ, NZ Herald) I find that Astrill slows me down a lot if I leave it set to UK as I normally do.  So I just turn it off when not downloading.  Otherwise, I have no complaints, and will renew my 6-month sub when it runs out later this year.

I only turn Astrill on occasionally, when I need the VPN. It's off most of the time. There is an NZ server but i've never bothered to try it.
