Hi, I was wondering if anybody had experience with using the Amazon EC2 service as a web proxy?
I am moving to China for a few years for work, so I need a medium term solution to web browsing. I have spent several months in China before so I know how broken web browsing is. Currently I VPN into our US office and use a Squid proxy we have running on a server there. It works but the performance is low due the high number of staff using a single cable modem connection in the USA.
While I could simply use a commercial proxy service I thought maybe Amazon's EC2 service might be a better way to go as I would have more control and probably better bandwidth. Speed out of China is pretty good once you get a fiber connection and I gather an unlimited 20Mbs fiber connection only cost about $240 a year. The ping rates to the USA are about 200mS.
I was thinking on the server I would only need OpenVPN and Squid so I guess that's not a problem for the EC2 service?
I would have the choice of a service based in the USA, Singapore or Tokyo. I will be near Shanghai so I guess Tokyo would be my best choice?
What do people think? Has anyone had trouble accessing Amazon's EC2 service while in China?
