My Tomtom car GPS Go 6100 has a battery failure. It will not hold a charge at all. Also the holder for the device that sticks to Window has also failed and drops downwards making in unusable when driving.
I quite like the Tomtom 6100 as it has lifetime speed cameras etc.

It seems possible to replace battery but Tomtom are no help there. It seemed quite difficult for a lay person to replace.

I am just wondering if I should replace it and what other brands of GPS would be worth considering

If you use a GPS please let me know which one and what brand and would you recommend

I would think that a standalone GPS is just about obsolete now? Google or Apple maps on your phone is all you need. Never pay for map update again.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

That's what I thought. Heck my car has sat nav and I never use it. It's always the phone in it's cradle. That said I've just had the car upgraded to Android Auto/CarPlay so it's kind of the phone maps now anyway I guess.

It's personal preference really. Sometimes I use both at the same time. Google Map is good because it knows about traffic jams, but the car one has a bigger screen and clearer sound, and I don't have to worry about it draining my phone battery, or accidentally leaving the phone in my car; and yes, I know about Android Auto and Apple Car Play, if you car supports them, and you prefer those.

My standalone TomTom is also not holding its charge now, but it still works when sitting in its cradle connected to the cigarette lighter socket. It has lifetime World map, so it comes in handy for travelling, when mobile data or WiFi is expensive or difficult, as long as I remember to preload the regions map onto it.
