I'm trying to find a security camera for my parents. Budget is $200-300, preferably including a PoE injector, and wall mount (if required).

Must be:

  • Black (this is the hardest criteria!)
  • Dome-style (not bullet), fixed lens, something reasonably wide like 2.8mm
  • Exterior wall-mounted (either direct, or with a small and unobtrusive wall-mount kit)
  • PoE
  • Onboard SD card storage (won't be using a NVR)
  • ONVIF compliant and half-decent English firmware so I can use a generic CCTV app on iOS, a web browser, or Scrypted to view and review footage
  • Prefer something switchable between H264/H265

Something from Dahua like this, with a mount like this, looks perfect, but I'm struggling to find somewhere local I can purchase from easily, and I also don't know the price of the camera.

I tried Andy from Empire Technology on AliExpress, but the only black dome camera he sells is a fancy motorized one. If white was allowable I'd definitely purchase from him.

I'd be happy to consider other brands with a reasonable reputation like Amcrest or Hikvision, but again I'm not sure what the options are for purchasing easily in NZ.

It's important that it has good English firmware and a web interface that doesn't require ActiveX or worse, so I'd prefer not to risk a no-name AliExpress option (I have plenty of those at my own house, but I can deal with their peculiarities).

Any thoughts welcome!

Apologies, I probably meant turret camera, not dome camera, in my OP.

I’ll see if I can find a local supplier for Hilook.

That Dahua camera from Viewtech is $289 for non-commercial pricing.

Dicker data, Hills ltd, Scott Electrical, SWL ltd and Viewtech are shown on Dahua NZ's Facebook page.

I have also seen Dahua products at IoT wholesale and PB tech.

As far as I know; Viewtech, IoT Wholesale and PB Tech are the only companies who will sell to non-commercial.

I think Dahua NZ office would respond to emails asking for help finding a particular product. I have been to see their office in person, there is someone there each week.

Their email is Dahua_NZ<AT>dahuatech.com .

Typical woke oldies, I'm sure a white camera would do the job with equal aplomb.

If all else fails, a standard white/beige camera and a spray can of black enamel will do the job, just mask off the dome and hit it with two or three coats. That'll hugely expand the range you can choose from.

I agree, but unfortunately this requirement is quite clear. Black spray paint also won’t cut it, so I’m forced to narrow my range of options by approximately 98%…

What's the issue with painting?

If a good job is done, then it would look like it's supposed to be like that.

This Hilook camera looks like it would fit the bill and it comes in black:

Hilook IPC-T261H-MU

I think (TBC) I can get it from PBTech for $250.

Question: Can I mount this camera directly on the wall, but 'twisted', so it looks like this?

The specs say:

  • Angle Adjustment: Pan: 0° to 360°, tilt: 0° to 75°, rotate: 0° to 360°

I think this allows for mounting on the wall but not pointing perpendicular to the wall? I've not dealt with turret cameras before, only bullet...

I got an Amcrest 4k turret one in black a year or so ago from Amazon. But the new model that has been released doesn't appear to come in black. The only one they still seem to do in black is  this one https://amzn.to/3phB49j

The one I got looked identical to this and this it was less than $150 delivered to NZ at the time https://amcrest.com/ultrahd-4k-8mp-turret-poe-ip-camera-security-3840x2160-4-0mm-lens-white-ip8m-t2499eb-40mm.html

Yes, you can mount turrets like this.

The cameras are literally a ball inside and the housing locks the position.

Thanks a lot for confirming, this removes the need to purchase a wall mount which is excellent.

Sometimes it can depend where the wire comes out of the ball and how high the back it is. But the specs should say the range

Reminds me about wall mount and the fly lead;

Yeah.... this might open the next can of worms.

Unless you have a wall cavity for the connector, a backing box is recommended.

They also make boxes.... like this.... swl.co.nz/dahua-pfa130 ...yet another thing to find in black....

Although you can use 'any' box, so long as it is water proofed and fits the camera base.

Leaning towards Dahua at the moment (DH-IPC-HDW3641TMP-AS-0280B).

Looks like the wall mount would also give me some ‘cable stuffing’ space so I might include one of those just in case.

To round this thread out I ended up with the Dahua 3641 and the 204W black wall mount.

Both ordered from infronttech.com.au. Very helpful, fast shipping, NZ$265 for camera and mount delivered to NZ (and $70 of that was shipping). Added a cheap TP-Link PoE injector and a microSD card from PBTech to complete the setup.

Have tested the camera and it seems to perform well, won’t be mounted for a couple of months.
