It works, but I don't think it is free outside of the US.

irangejuice: Does the Kindle 3 3G support experimental free 3G browsing like the American version?

AFAIK it only lets you access amazons servers and wikipedia, you can't browse to any sites outside of those..

You can browse other sites, but it's not free.

Strange, so how does one read blogs and such?

Also, if it's not free how does the $ charging work?

Only reason I'm asking why is because I'm still trying to decide between the 3G and non-3G model.

Kindles should be tied to an Amazon account. Not sure how the billing happens when you don't have a CC on file with them.

Go with the 3G only if you have a phone that doesn't do 3G hotspot (like Android/WinPhone/jailbroken iPhones).

I've seen reports of it just failing and saying you don't have access if you try to browse over 3G in other countries? I should dig those up..

I just got a message from Ian (Nutshell), a New Zealand company that makes smartphone holders, covers with his latest creation - the Amazon Kindle 3G+WiFi leather sleeve. With natural anti-static lining (kill the possums!)

The price is set in US$, but he can make it NZ$ 1:1 (plus GST). If you want details, contact Ian here on Geekzone.

I've just ordered mine (6", 3G & Wi-Fi) via the affiliate link. I'm pretty excited for it to arrive, looks like my shipping time has gone back to normal and should arrive between 20-22nd October according to Amazon :D

Few questions for 3G owners:

Have you tried browsing via 3G? What kind of charges did you receive? I am curious to know how the billing works exactly. Are you able to browse Wikipedia or any other websites free of charge?

I decided against purchasing a case from Amazon when I saw Ian's case. Will investigate that today as well.

As for the Amazon e-books affiliate link, if I follow the link from here or a bookmark will it still net you affiliate rewards (assuming I make a purchase) no matter how much looking around I do in the store? Just don't want it timing out on me or something silly.

I'm not on the 3G, but the Kindle ties into your Amazon account. If you have a credit card stored with them, it will use that.

There is no timeout. If you click on the affiliate link, it will use that. Unless you navigate to a different website and then through to another Amazon page.

It doesn't work.  You get a message stating that some countries don't support the functionality, and it fails.  You need a WiFi connection to browse outside Wikipedia and the Kindle store (you can't even access Amazon.com).  You don't get charged though.

I've had my Kindle awhile now and really love it! I use it with Amazon's leather case that has the pull-out light - just perfect for reading in bed with the lights off & without disturbing anyone else.

If you are looking for a waterproof cover (for reading in the bath, at the beach over summer, etc) look out for the TPU Guide Accessory Case by Sea to Summit. It's water & dust proof, abrasion resistant, and clear enough that the Kindle screen is still very easy to read.

The large size (155 x 210 mm) fits the Kindle perfectly.

Bivouac don't show them in their online store & will order them in if the retail store doesn't have stock. I paid just under $30.

Amazon throws an error message telling you to add a credit card if one isn't already entered.

About using US addresses - be careful. I had my old US address still on file on my account so used it to get a couple of books. Part way through one transaction I got a message saying I was accessing the account from outside the US & asking me to change my address. Being smart, I figured that US citizens travel outside the US so why shouldn't I use the address they had used with my account for years. I tried to buy one more book & poof! was locked out of my account.

My Kindle was still able to access the books I'd purchased but it took a week of talking to Amazon before I had access to my account again.

Get this - if a US resident travels and tries to buy books from another country they have to temporarily change their country address too. Or phone Amazon and jump through all the hoops I had to go through. Taking the Kindle overseas from here also means changing the Amazon account if we want to purchase books from other countries. To me, thats a huge fail. I am going to be travelling through three different countries soon and won't always be able to update my Amazon account with address details as I travel. PITA. Amazon said the only way to avoid this is to load up before leaving home and don't try to buy overseas.

I'm following this up with Amazon because I believe that their geo restrictions & the way they are handling them is contrary to their advertising. A BBB complaint may follow.
