It seems the Kindle is now available for New Zealand. Just a bit late, but better than never.

There are two models: WiFi and 3G. I guess the WiFi one (cheaper, US$139) don't have any interference from our loved local mobile operators, that's why it's available now (rather, pre-order now, delivery starts end of month).

I just checked and the shipping is around NZD$28

The Wi-Fi + 3G model + shipping is still cheaper than the Kobo and a far better device.

Whitcoulls, are you listening?

This is the old 6" one. Why not the DX model with the 9.7" screen?? Dumping the old stock??

When i click on the 9.7 DX link

"In Stock.
We are not able to ship this item to your default shipping address."

They are avaliable in 2 sizes. I wonder if the free 3G access applies in NZ? Do amazon have an agreement with an NZ telco now, that allows this?

Makes the Whitcoulls Kobo at $295 look very overpriced.

Well, i couldn't resist, my order is placed.

Oddly though, and a bit annoying is that i couldn't add the AU charger adaptor as i wasn't getting it sent to an Au address... oh well i knew that ipod usb charging adaptor would be handy.

I used this link to get it: http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reading-Display-Graphite/dp/B003DZ1Y8Q/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1

It allows you to select your country when ordering.

Xplaya: How do we filter Amazon for New Zealand?

You mean the ebooks or the Kindle itself?

I put together a page with links to the two Kindle models available for New Zealand (aff links).

Just to test, I downloaded Kindle for my PC and Android. I then proceeded to buy a book, just recently released in New Zealand. The purchase went through with no problems and downloaded the book to my Android device over WiFi in less than 30 seconds.

The book has been available in New Zealand stores for only a couple of weeks, so it's good to see it was available for US$11 on Kindle instead of the $45 I paid to Whitcoulls. The book is also available on Kobo for $26, making Kindle not only cheaper to buy (hardware) but to load (ebooks).
