my two arrived a couple days ago. super impressed.

surprised that NFL gamepass worked pretty well via tab casting from my browser.

But, yep, fantastic.

i have two wifi networks setup, my VPN router cascaded off my telecom VDSL router/modem.

if i want to use my vpn, i pop my device on that wifi ... but of course gaming and youtube is better done without being routed via the states. So for eg if i ever wanted to watch netflix ... thanks to my ps3 not having the option to remember network passwords if switched .. involved me booting up ps3, running network wizard, connecting to VPN wifi, launching netflix ,.... then movie.

with chromecast i basically grab my phone, tap my dashclock wifi widget to switch networks, launch the netflix app ... and tap the hromecast button.

my tv turns on, changes to the right hdmi , and starts playing the movie.

freaking awesome!

i'd throw to chromecast #2 for youtube and other stuff..

but just being one tap away from yr tv coming to life and playing what i was seconds ago looking at on my phone is a game changer.

chromecast + hdmi cec for the win.

PS if you guys are looking for a good VPN option, www.privateinternetaccess.com

cheap, does Open VPN, free switching to other servers/regions and just follow the guide on their site for the boot up script that configs yr dd-wrt router with yr login dets .... you can pick up a cheap compatible router to flash for $50 or less .... AND turns out they let you come in on up to 5 devices at a time. so split the year $50 sub with 4 mates, each of you slap up a dd-wrt router ... and put what ever device you like up behind that. netflix android app works fine - sends to my chromecast and does it's biz with out a hitch.

Can vouch for privateinternetaccess. Another I've found is unlocator.com Its free at moment, as is in beta, and also has a tutorial on how to setup chromecast through a dd-wrt router https://support.unlocator.com/customer/portal/articles/1284817-how-to-setup-dd-wrt-to-work-with-chromecast(found it after googling to try and resolve my issue). Getting the E2500 dropped off next week, so will see if I can bumble my way through the setup with the Vodafone station, chromecast etc

No idea, fluked it I guess. I don't think they could have blocked NZ for that race. Normally I have to use a vpn to view on the PC. This time I was able to view it in Chrome without vpn & sent it to the chomecast. Will see what happens for the next race.

Meanwhile I'm having all sorts of problems trying to get my routers to work with chromecast. I'm able to use my old trusty Compex NetPassage 27G ok, sets up just like it should. Though I'd prefer to use my TP-Link M3420 as it accommodates a back up 3G router, but no luck with it. Same for a Sapido RB-1732 another 3G capable router I have. With those two all I get is this..

Not quite sure where to go from here. This network stuff is all new to me & everything I read seems to assume a certain amount of knowledge already.

Hi guys (and guyettes) ... my ChromeCast arrived today (a mate in LA bought it through Google Shop and sent it on to me).

Plugged it into TV, up came the screen no problems. Set up requires a wifi device (essentially it broadcasts itself as a wifi station), and since I wanted to use my desktop for subsequent 'casting', I got a little flumoxed when they said it's supported only by Win 7 onwards. Went to use an Android tablet and then it struck me that all I had to do was use a USB wifi dongle in my desktop to achieve same thing .... and YES it does work with XP perfectly well.
Completing set up is essentially giving the device the OK to run over my wifi network, and installing an extension on Chrome browser ... after that you no longer need the wifi access unless you are going to control the unit off another device.

After that, it works perfectly fine ... I got YouTube and TVOne 'On Demand" streaming in glorious colur and sounb.

Hi,

I was using the Chromecast with Netflix successfully up until 6th September and then it stopped working.

I have a TPLink router with ddwrt using a couple of iptables I entered in. I don't know why it stopped but wondering if anyone else was having trouble with Netflix + unblockus or if anyone else is still having success. (It works on my MacBookPro)

Do I understand you correctly - because you are using a USB dongle and not a network card to access your wifi on your desktop PC the Chrome Cast extension works even tho you are running Windows XP and not Windows 7 or Vista which is what the documentation says is the minumum OS requirement?

This is exactly what I want to do - throw from my browser to Chromecast but I thought I couldn't do that unless I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. I already use a USB dongle by the way so no extra expense there at all if it works as you describe.

Yes, that is correct. Because the ChromeCast unit is essentially a wifi server, you use its wifi 'network' to connect to it ... just as if it was any other wifi station or router broadcasting its SSID. Once connected, use Chrome browser to go to www.google.com/chromecast/setup and you will get the settings screen .... just like accessing a wifi router really and takes just a few seconds. When finished the set up, you can dispense with the wifi dongle.

When completed, install the GoogleCast extension into Chrome browser (easiest is straight off Chrome "add extension" feature. After that, whenever you open Chrome you will see a Google Cast icon top-right of the URL bar ... click that, click the device and your computer screen will appear on your TV screen.

My reading of the documentation and specs is that controlling ChromeCast using their downloadable application/app (which presumably has pre-programed icons/links for NetFlix, YouTube, etc etc) on a laptop, requires Win7 or above. Actually, you've now prompted me to try an XP install .

Mine finally arrived today. Kind of surprized that the setup wouldn't work from my desktop until I added a WiFi dongle to it. After that i could cast via LAN cable only OK. Even iSky seemed to work reasonably well or as good as iSky ever works.. Works well on YouTube.

I assume that the Chromecast installer will not work on Win XP as it wouldn't install on my wife's laptop.

Will have to read thru the 15 page thread to see what I'm missing.

I side loaded the Android app as per the link back in this thread OK but interesting to see you can buy it on the iTunes app store for about $1.29. Why not on Google Play Store??
