Yep the Chromecast has just been announced and let's you (sort of) "mirror" content from a range of devices with Chrome to your TV with just this HDMI stick! Yes there are also some cheap chinese Android sticks around but for this price (35USD) this is seriously a no brainer; but not currently available in NZ..

So I guess it's time to get out my "lightning-speed mouse" and try to score one off Amazon later today. May also be my first time to try out Youshop as well as it will probably not ship to NZ yet.. :(

Approximate total cost of package would be 62NZD with Youshop.

Anyone else buying one (or 24) as well?

Yep. Count me in. Saw a summary of the Google announcement this morning. It is all pretty cool!

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Oh and not to mention it also comes with free 3 months of Netflix for a limited time (if purchased in the US)! This has got to work well with Slingshot's Global Mode!

This looks pretty cool! Has anybody managed to find a site that ships to NZ?

You may want to use YouShop as they are usually cheaper than a US retailer that ships to NZ..

I have ordered two from Amazon shipping to shipito.com. I have used shipito.com in the past to get my Nexus 4, had no issues at all. Unsure on how much it'll cost via shipito.com, can update if people want me too

I'd like to ask (as usual) for those ordering from Amazon to please use our Amazon Kindle order page to get to Amazon or go to the Google Chromecast on Amazon page (with our aff link)... That'd be a great help to us :)

And yes, ordering one now...

It's not a replacement for Airplay or Miracast. It cannot mirror your workstations. In fact, it only supports very limited services like Netflix, YouTube and Google Play.

You are better off to spend $60 on below and get a miracast device that will mirror anything on your laptop/pc to the TV. VLC, Windows Media Player, Web Browsers, iTunes. Anything that you can run on your PC.

And if you upgrade your Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, miracast support is built in. Miracast is the answer to Apple's airplay.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I've just ordered one so I hope it does :) Not holding my breath though - my understanding is it doesn't actually directly stream between the devices?  Just hands over the required info for the Chromecast to start doing it directly itself? If that's the case it may not work with Global Mode since Global Mode doesn't seem to work with any Netflix apps (Xbox, PS3 etc) - only from browsers.

one review on amazon

While I did order this product and am happy to do so, I am disappointed the marketing materials make it appear as though the dongle is powered through the HDMI connection. It is not. The dongle needs to be plugged in any time you're using it. The pictures they released do not show this at all.

I too thought it was powered via HDMI.

Yes, I was just about to hit the order but then saw "box includes... power adapter".

Nope, thanks. Continue to use our HTPC - which we have to since we play TV from the PC anyway...

You can just use the included USB cable to charge it from a USB port on your TV?

correct its USB powered

The dongle itself looks beautiful until you realize the power adapter is hanging off the end of it
