Hulu Plus now adding Chromecast support. I'm leaving home now so haven't tested it from my tablet, but if it's like Netflix it won't work outside the USA - but still worth a test later tonight.

As per this article from androidheadlines.com, it appears Amazon are now shipping the Chromecast to countries outside of the U.S.

I just tried a dummy order (I already have one) to my residential address in NZ and it didn't bring up any shipping restriction warnings like it normally would when an item can't ship to NZ, so it looks like Amazon are willing to ship to NZ... for the time being.

Seems to me its utility will still be pretty limited if it's still got baked in US DNS settings and is not rootable. Maybe they will fix this with a software upgrade.

I am underwhelmed with it - will only work with YouTube off an iPad (and probably will cast from Chrome but I haven't tried that). Netflix is a non-starter and that's really what I wanted it for. I was thinking of selling it but given it was so cheap decided to hang on to it to see what developed. Hopefully this is starting to happen now.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Update from Android Central "Update: It looks like Amazon is no longer processing Chromecast orders to shipping addresses outside the U.S. Existing order seem to be fine, however."

Anyone else rooted the Chromecast with Flashcast? I have done both of mine, easy and quick. Now just waiting for someone to release a method of streaming from my Android device to the Chromecast.

What can you do with Flashcast? Can you install a proxy such as Hola?

From the looks of the xda thread you can change the dns settings which would be very handy. The problem is that ny chromecasts that have seen the internet will now be on firmware version 13300 which has a locked bootloader.

Perhaps I should kidnap sbiddle at the border this morning and purloin his mint in the box chromecasts! ;-)

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Not with Flashcast, have a read of this thread (its only 8 pages long) in particularly page 6 and the explanation by Smartphoneguy near the bottom.

So the process is, apply Flashcast as per this thread, then eureka.zip from the above link and you are rooted and immune from Google updates that stop you rooting and modding your Chromecast.

The only issue you will have is that if you have used your Chromecast already, chances are the updated firmware will have been installed and Flashcast wont work anymore.

Edit: I didnt answer your proxy question, this thread has a file to change to unlocator and down a bit where to change the DNS settings for other services.

"Locked bootloaded"

I love how "open" suddenly changes into "let's take away anything that can make you happy".

Maybe get a new one and start from scratch. Let me know if you want to borrow a rooted one to see if it will do what you want.
