I have been looking into over recent years as a building designer. But the whole problem is future proofing it, and not relying on proprietary systems that have been created by companies, that are locked into their system, unless they can be easily replaced. Anything that relies on the cloud and their own third party servers to work, is a major risk, because if that company decides to close down the service, or go out of business you are stuffed. Using systems that use open standards I think are the best. But it just dates so quickly, and for much I can't see a lot of benefit. Remotely turning on lights can be good, but Wemo have systems for that which are simple plugin devices.

i'd prefer to keep using standard lamps and a permanently installed solution. leave wireless for your mobile devices and have home automation connected by and ultimately controlled by trusty copper.

another point for the system to be alarm controlled, if say you went with the wrong vendor and they stop updating their app and it no longer runs on the latest android/iOS then you simply buy the latest app interface board for your alarm and you're away again.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

ive got a loxone install in my own home , going on 3.5 years now. its good

ive consulted on a few installs, hmu if you want more info

its amazing that for 20+ years as we leave we can push a button that locks every door, turns off the light, and arms the alarm ... on our cars ... and we wouldnt accept any less than that on a standard model ... and yet with our homes we are still happy to carry around a bunch of metal sticks in our pockets walk past every room making sure the lights are off as we leave
