hellonearthisman: Hot air rises, that's why smoke/co2 detectors go on the roof and why the fire department says to crawl out of a smoke filled room.

If you put them on the roof then they need to be waterproof.

I integrated my NEST with OpenHAB then setup rules to send me an email if smoke is detected, and also turn the hall sensor lights on if its night and smoke is detected.

Seriously considering the Nest Protect for home, gonna get a couple, but I saw someone suggest that for CO detection they need to be on the ground? I was going to mount 1 in the hallway that all our bedrooms come off, and one in the kitchen/dining area on the wall or ceiling.

Thanks. I was also wondering, do the 240v versions have a backup battery? I could forsee a remote possibility of a fire/gas leak occuring during power out status that could be quite nasty. Probably more remote than the battery going flat, but I presume the system would alert you if the battery was low, in such a way that ignoring it wasn't easy :-)
