yep order definitely cancelled (as shown in order status on walmart site), tried again with another card on paypal, same result. cant edit home country on paypal, its stuck as NZ

It's not possible to change the country of a PayPal address. The way to do what you want is to create a new account with a US address.

tried to create another paypal account but looks like it wont link NZ issues visas to a US address

tried target.com, using just a NZ visa (not paypal) and a youshop address ... initially seemed to be okay, but then cancelled

paypal didnt work on target

I see that my pre-ordered Google Home is finally on its way to Youshop, so should be able to do my own comparisons with it and the Echo when it turns up.

I've been holding off on doing a major home integration setup until I've decided which one suits me best - Alexa has been working well for me, and the month's free trial of unlimited music is good, but I'm more invested in the Google ecosystem and have various audio chromecasts/google play music stuff already set up, so it will be interesting.

As far as ordering, I just used a VPN to get a US IP address, created a new gmail account and ordered from Google's US storefront, using my Youshop address and my LoadedForTravel VISA - I just said the billing address was the same as the shipping one and it all went through fine.

Mine should be here monday via shipito. The box looked larger than needed for 2 of them and I didnt want to ask them to find another one because it was getting close to when I needed to pay and get it sent.

Fingers crossed that it gets thru without gst.

I dunno, I'm pretty invested in the Google ecosystem, but the thought of having Google listening in 24/7 on my home environment is a bridge too far at this point.

It'll be the same as the Echo - monitoring the network connections with Wireshark showed that it wasn't surreptitiously transmitting all day, but only started transferring data after it received the activation phrase, which is in-line with Amazon's (and Google's) stated privacy policy.

I had a friend in the US buy one for my and it's on the way via FedEx. The one caveat I've found is that you're account (phone) needs to be set to US English for the 'Home' to work as that's its default language. I am most interested in sending music to Chromecast audio via voice so will post results here.

Walmart, Target and Best Buy all use address verification for purchasing so you can't use a NZ credit card and a US (YouShop) postal address. I also tried an Entropay virtual visa card and that didn't work either as Entropay does not support AVS. Some say they've managed to do it by using PayPal though. Maybe set your default PayPal address to your YouShop address for this to work?

Well mine are here. Only hassle setting up was setting the phone language to english US, which is weird because that is what I normally choose but it was on english NZ for some reason.

No problems with traffic, asked how the traffic is to mcdonalds and it got the home address from google and told me it was light and 7 mins by car.

Spotify integration sucks compared to the echo. On the echo I can walk into the kitchen and say alexa play spotify and it till take over from whatever is playing. Home either errors if its playing elsewhere or it just starts playing some random crap that it decides. Have to actually use the phone to cast it to the speaker instead.

Audio is about the same as the big echo. Actually seems better at hearing me when its loud than the big echo, which is quite terrible at being able to go too loud to be able to control it.

She also assures me that she is not skynet.

Yep, I avoided them too as delivery to YouShop was 15th December where Walmart and Target were 3 days.

Yup.

Seems to have issues with my calandar at the moment, ask whats on my calandar and it tells me about a reminder in 2017, so I think its looking at the wrong calandar or something, alexa tells me all my recurring things like insurance payments, trash day, domain renewal as my next 5 things.
