fearandloathing: Sonoff devices are not certified for use in NZ as far as I can tell? Plus not burying non certified electrical devices in the wall cavity, and equally the complications of insurance, should my house burn down.

All good points but...

Thousands and thousands of these things are being used all around the world anyway. Why are they not building them with a port to sense the existing wall switch? The additional marginal cost is one PCB screw terminal. It makes no difference to the electrical safety either way.

I saw the WEMO stuff in my local Noel Leeming the day before yesterday. It was in the Home Automation stand they had, along with the Philips Hue stuff. I was kind of surprised to see it there, actually. It doesn't seem to appear on their website though. You might have to contact a store to see what is available.

As far as the switches go - I thought that the idea when installing a Philips Hue hub was to buy and stick on the wall (anywhere you want) the compatible switches that operate the lights and just stop using the regular switches which you leave turned on to operate. I guess you're looking for something more durable.

I really can't remember. It could be. I just remember seeing the brand and thinking it was strange that they had them. I didn't think anyone stocked them any more.

[edit] I remember seeing some kind of starter kits with two bulbs, etc.

I have a sonoff basic installed behind an old fashioned toggle light switch, it's hooked up to mqtt, so i can turn the lights on and off using both the switch and mqtt.

HTPC / Home automation (home assistant) enthusiast.

Hi could you explain how that was wired? I thought it couldn't be done without done hacking.
