hi all,

Advanced meters for natural Gas.

Just re-opening the thread about advanced digital meters.  Since the last posting, there's been developments with Genesis and Vector introducing advanced digital meters for gas later in 2020.

Focus on delivering gas data routinely to the Genesis customer app

Cool, and about time.  Of course means they can drop that part of the workforce.  So they can spin it however they want, but it reduces their ongoing costs.

Now if they (specifically Genesis) just sort their crap out an allow realtime usage data or at least -1 to -2 hours rather than -48.

They can't do that.

Their so-called "smart" meters aren't at all smart, they're just ordinary dumb as a fencepost meters with a built-in cellular modem (actually in most cases a GPRS modem reliant on Vodafone's 2G network :( ). All they can do is "phone home" every night and upload the previous day's half hour interval data.
So maybe they could give you -24 hours data, but that's a bit unreliable in the case they miss a single night's data, they would almost always pick it up the next night.

"Smart" meters in NZ are all about saving the retailer the expense of a meter reader person, customer benefit or customer advantage has nothing to do with it
The kind of actually smart meter you are thinking about would cost the retailer more to buy and install but would provide the retailer with no benefit whatsoever, in fact since they would enable the consumer to potentially manage their load to the consumer's advantage, they would actually be a dis-benefit to the retailer.

You will see no relief from this unless the government forces ownership of meters away from retailers and either back to the lines (and pipes) companies where they used to be (thanks a heap, Max Bradford), or perhaps to seperate 'meter services' companies.

I thought the smart meters were run by Advanced Metering Systems (AMS) for all the energy providers in NZ, and they collect the usage, aggregate and pass on to whoever wants it?

Point is I don't know if it's all in genesis's camp to 'fix'

There is also Metrix who was a subsidiary of Mercury until they sold them off in Dec-18 that also do smart meters
