Question regarding AMcrest, you mention no geofencing.

Do you have then to manually turn on/off everytime you get/leave home?

I leave it running all the time, the few times I get caught on camera is when I'm heading up the drive or coming home, for which it doesn't matter, and in fact it's useful to have a record of who leaves and arrives. Unless you've got cameras set up inside the house (don't! Just... don't) I've never really understood why you'd want geofencing.

This is how we operate. Works well.

In an ideal world, I can see the appeal of a getting a phone ping if someone triggers the motion detection that isn't me / family regardless of whether I'm home or not, but that would require either facial recognition or some kind of geopresence triangulation - not likely any time soon.

E.g. a ping that a courier has flung something on my doorstep (whether I'm home or at work) would be super.

Hi, long time stalker here but this thread is of great interest. Going thru same here in ChCh.   Partner rolled back to Apple from Nokia 8 and....Cleverloop App no longer there so looking at something to solve that.  That was when I found out about the state of Cleverloop. Doing some research on Amcrest alternatives now.

Interested if anyone has had any experience with the Amcrest Cloud.  Any feedback?

I've deliberately avoided it because I don't want all my video footage to be one breach away from ending up on pastebin. That's the benefit of running an NVR, you're not relying on "the cloud" meaning "someone else's computer somewhere", for your security.

Some further points that came up yesterday:

The PoE version is all powered through the NVR, so it has an n-port PoE switch built in that runs and powers the cameras. The external interface is a single ethernet port to your router and a 48V power brick that takes a standard cloverleaf or figure-8 power cord, i.e. nothing US-specific to it. If you need to reboot the cameras for any reason just unplug the ethernet cable to it, although in my case these are the first cameras I've had that have never needed to be rebooted/reset. In any case the NVR does a reboot at 2am (configurable) for PM purposes, but that only reboots the NVR, not the cameras.

I got a cheap SSD and only record on motion trigger, which minimises power consumption/heat in the NVR. The fan in it is an annoyingly loud 40mm, if you're going to be working/sleeping in the same room then fit a 40mm Noctua and it's inaudible with no effect on cooling, at least with an SSD, I can provide a link to the instructions for fitting it if required.

Thanks @neb and thanks for the session yesterday, very informative. Will let you know when I've put my shopping list together.

@neb has very kindly been helping me choose an Amcrest system. I emailed the following to him but he suggested posting it here in case the answer is of interest to others.

********

I’ve been looking at the Amcrest hardware but am getting confused by all the options. I don’t necessarily need 4k video or PoE as long as it supports wireless cameras. I filtered their products by HD IP Wireless and price which reduced it to 8 options. Most of them say no built-in wi-fi but I assume that just means they need to be plugged into the router. Was looking at this https://amcrest.com/amcrest-nv4116-hs-16ch-720p-1080p-3mp-4mp-5mp-6mp-8mp-network-video-recorder-supports-up-to-16-x-8-megapixel-ip-cameras-supports-up-to-6tb-hdd-not-included.html ($150 on Amazon) or even this https://amcrest.com/amcrest-nv2116-hs-1080p-16ch-1080p-3mp-4mp-5mp-6mp-network-video-recorder-supports-up-to-16-x-1080p-2-1mp-wifi-ip-cameras-at-30fps-realtime-supports-up-to-6tb-hdd-not-included-no-built-in-wifi.html ($100 but out of stock on Amazon) although not really sure what the difference is, (possibly the quality of playback video if playing back multiple cameras?). Or maybe it’s worth paying the extra to get the same one as you to have the option to use PoE? Does yours support Wireless cameras too or just PoE cameras?

Thanks.

Figuring out the difference requires a close reading of the specs. The main one is that the NVRs are video bandwidth-limited, or at least CPU-power-for-video-processing-bandwidth limited, so as you go to higher resolutions/bandwidths you can connect less cameras. So if you look at the 4116 for example you get:

16CH 8MP Recording @ 30 and 2CH Playback @ 15fps, 16CH 6MP Recording @30fps and 2CH Playback @ 30fps, 16CH 5MP Recording @30fps and 3CH Playback @30fps, 16CH 4MP Recording @30fps and 4CH Playback @30fps, 16CH 3MP Recording @30fps and 4CH Playback @30fps, and 16CH 2MP Recording @30fps and 8CH Playback @30fps

(phew!) and for the 2116 it's:

16CH 3MP Recording and 4CH Playback @ 30fps, 16CH 4MP Recording and 4CH Playback @ 20fps, and 16CH 5MP Recording and 2-CH Playback @ 8fps

Those ones also look like they take the camera feed via an external switch/router, so you're going to be saturating that with video traffic if you use always-on recording rather than motion triggering. The PoE ones OTOH have a built-in switch (and PoE injector) so all the traffic stays at the NVR.

In terms of wireless support with the PoE ones, I'd guess you'd need to feed that in via an external WiFi device, so you've still got the problem of saturating the link with video data if you're using always-on. With motion- triggered it's not a big deal, unless possibly if multiple cameras get triggered simultaneously.

Thanks @neb. I can't run Ethernet to my cameras so will need to go for Wi-Fi but as you say, for limited motion detection recording and playback it shouldn't be too big a deal. I've emailed Amcrest to ask if any of their NVR's have built in Wi-Fi but I'm guessing not. Apart form the 4116 supporting 16 channels, and the 4108 having PoE, the technical specs look very similar. As I don't need PoE do you think the 4116 might be a better choice for me (and a little cheaper)?

Thanks.

The non-PoE ones should be cheaper, you can also look at getting a -08 or -04 (depending on whether the NVR range supports it), e.g. 4108 vs. 4116 if you don't need 16 cameras.

I think we have a winner! :-)

The 4108 only appears in the Wi-Fi filtered page as a 1TB hard drive model but the no drive version comes up on a site search. $100 on Amazon so significantly cheaper than the PoE version.

Now I just have to choose the cameras! ;-)

OK, I'll keep an eye out for NVR discount codes... best to get the driveless version and fit that yourself over here, only takes a few minutes to do.

So in the next month or so I will be removing my cleverloop system, I am having a number of issues with mine now, you can no longer download the iOS app, 2 of my cameras are having real issues displaying a live feed and alerts to the phone when something happens can be delayed for hours.  As the company is no longer trading you have no idea how long the app and storage will last before they kill it.

The fact that they haven't even emailed users saying they are out of business now is another kick in the butt. There website now links to http://support.cleverloop.com/ however this now shows as a holding page saying for freshdesk (the SASS provider for their site).

Have replaced with arlo and also looking at wyze cameras (having one sent over from amazon).

What I mean by preserve is reuse the cleverloop IP cameras in another setup, either app or NVR?

Here is an example: https://www.ispyconnect.com/download.aspx

Before decommissioning my Cleverloop gear, I had a look at tinyCam Pro for Android. It worked fine with the Cleverloop system. That was some time ago, though. Not sure if the app is still available or if it's still maintained and legit.
