This was quite amusing - first attempt at using auto-track to get a moving shot of the car, and forgot that altitude hold is GPS-based so as the car wen up the hill, the drone got closer and closer. Just missed the fence and road

I want to get some shots of my boat under sail but the logistics of launching and retrieving are slightly daunting

A family friend took his out for the first time while on his boat, it went up and he never saw it again.

My guess is the boat had moved, and then he hit return to home...

I've heard this a few times. I wonder about if it is the difference between flying from drone perspective (ie your controller screen) vs your own eyes. I've never flown a drone, but used to race RC cars. I had no issue having an RC car driving back at me at speed and skidding to a stop at my feet. But fewer dimensions to deal with!!

I’ve had one hit and a few misses with drones.

The first was on approach into Brisbane through 2000’ at 180 knots when it hit below me on the left side of the nose. Landed ok, but the plane needed a new radome and radar. Parts of the drone were found in the avionics bay under our feet. Very lucky the energy had dissipated by the radome and radar or else we would’ve lost a lot more. But cost about $200,000 in repairs.

Had a number of misses on approach in Auckland, Wellington and Melbourne too, bloody things need to be prevented from operating anywhere near airports.

Isn't it already illegal to fly them near airports./ It think DJI software also prevents the flying of them within any exclusion space.

Yep, it is illegal to do so and I'm sure that the majority of people who own drones have ones that are software locked from flying in restricted areas and are doing some amazing work with them, nothing better than seeing some great footage which would've been impossible to get ten years ago.

But there are those who don't know CAA Part 101, or have bought something that isn't software locked who get in our way. Unfortunately, like most things in this world, it will be those few who will ruin it for everyone else.

But as the title said, "Drone hit and misses" I've done it literally.

It's mostly because they are designed to return to a fixed point, which a yacht isn't. Plus, there are plenty of things for it to hit as it approaches the deck. We've flown it from anchor and got some really cool shots. I think the answer is to put someone ashore or in an anchored dinghy and sail past. A project for this summer
