So my sub-$200 drone has been fun to learn with....  thought I had lost it yesterday though :D

Was in my backyard with it out of the wind, all good, until I thought Id be smart and fly it up onto the deck..... bad move. Wind caught it so I corrected, wind caught it again and was pushing it straight to the pool. Gave it power and got moving upwards to keep out of the water but doing so meant the wind caught it even more, and pushed it straight to some trees at the neighbors - which it missed and thats when I lost sight of it.

Thought "Oh ****" and hit the auto-land button and then ran for the neighbors, but suspected it had not taken the auto-land request and was flying somewhere off into the distance.

Went onto my neighbors deck and said what I was there for, and noticed their cat and dog staring in the backyard - look over the deck, and theres my drone, right way up :D

Don't know if it accepted the auto land and thats where it stopped, or if it had actually hit their roof and gone down.

But either way, so glad I found it :)

What have been your near misses, or losses ? :) Or an awesome hit ? (ie great footage of something by accident) ? :)

This one was a pretty impressive hit. Not by me, just forwarding the footage.

I'm torn over getting a drone, or a new camera. I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on either!!

LOL, both could end up being expensive if lost :)

For fun, I'd say drone, but for hobby, camera.

Haha, I've had that before. Flew out from my deck, NW grabbed it and chucked it against a neighbours roof!

I've crashed more times that had hot dinners with my plastic WLToys drone.

I've completely and utterly smashed my 3D printed Hubsan drone, PLA shatters spectacularly at speed! Haha.

No footage sadly.

I did have a EF EF EF EF EF moment, was flying my GPS drone with auto-return to home on low battery. I'd flown it roughly 500m away from start point, over trees etc.

I got the low battery alarm, so pulled down on throttle to land it, it didn't respond and the ultra-low batt alarm immediately sounded next (usually 1 min fly time~) and it went straight up and flew away!
I was like EF EF EF sprinting trying to chase it, but lost sight.

Called the wife, said I'd lost it.. And then right where I took off, it was sitting there on the ground..... My relief was palpable.

So was mine when I saw it in the neighbors yard :D

And mines only a cheapie....  hate to lose anything bigger :D

My boss said he lost an expensive one... similar issue with the wind, was showing off how high it could go, hit the home button but wind was too strong and it became a dot in the distance.

Curious, do you all put identification information on your drones in case you lose it?

Most drones end up as shelfware, once the novelty wears off people don't know what to do with them any more. If you're not clear what well-defined role you have for one then this (or similar) is probably your best bet.

You mean like this? Would need a larger drone to fit all that.

If you want it returned quickly, label it:

If found in unexploded form please return to ISIS NZ, $your_address_here, Allāhu akbar!

It'll be returned quick smart, with an impressive police escort.

i have trouble with flying remote controlled UFOs - exactly the wind issue. the number of windless days a year I can count with one hand. so pretty much useless.

was the OP's drone a cheap one or expensive one? do expensive drones have wind auto correction?

Was a present from my folks, was $160ish all up inc spare mem card, battery and shipping.

Theyre now down to about $80 with spare battery.....  curses :D

https://www.kogan.com/nz/buy/foldable-zenith-drone-fpv-wi-fi-camera-bndl/

Sold out tho.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G82xJlQ5V4k    Image quality isn't fantastic but good enough for a bit of fun. The software FPV mode is a bit trippy - I prefer to retain control by my own sight, and let someone else use the goggles for FPV (not supplied).

I've had some hard crashes with mine and its still working so far - has gained a few scratches and the battery pops out when it hits most of the time. A bit of tape would prevent that.

Yeah there's always that risk. I get pretty good use out my GoPros and Sony RX100. I'm after either an A6600 or a Mavic 2 Pro. I've got some quite specific shots in mind. But just waiting for probably after Christmas (and to hit my house deposit goal!!)

I have a DJI spark, and stays relatively stable in wind. It uses much of the GPS technologies of the more expensive quads. But it will give you are warning if there is too much wind, and to return to base.  Personally I mainly use it for aerial landscape photos. The problem I have found with any flying device, is fear that the media has stirred up with them. Hasn't been much in the media lately, about them, but they are probably due for another round of stories.
