Gosh this just gets bigger and bigger,

Looking into the HASSIO  it doesn't work with the Lanbon Switches, and I see the concern others have with innocent but unecrypted comms between lanbon master switch and Hong Kong.
The perks of the Lanbon are the lower cost and NZ sDOC and ready integration with google assistant.

Im going to have to download and run HASSIO in virtual box to see what all the fuss is about,  Might be an excuse to make a little NAS/NUC server, to act as both a Plex Media server and HASSIO server,

To attain a touch panel switches, with Zigbee/zwave functionality behind it, that plays nice with google assistant and HASSIO, what is the go?  I see bunnings has Deta switches, and then I go down this tasmota rabbit hole. I have no intention of deciphering my own scripting or soldering on serial ports for flashing.

I have a lot more to learn it seems!

Hi I might be able to help you. I was pretty confident I could get most of benefits of control4 without the $50k cost.

I have successfully integrated with google assistant voice control

- Mitsubish Ducted Heat Pump Systems (+ wifi module & app)
- Philips Hue (+hub), bulkheads, pendants, chandeliers, outside gu10s, stairs, lamps, feature lights, kitchen led strips, 2x hue hubs. Hues on routines for sunset, & off.
- Somfy Blinds ( +hub)
- Samsung TVs ( although see my other post here for delays to turn on; support)
- Denon Drive for spotify and zone music works well

Still to come

- Denon Heos
- Yale Front Door Lock (zigbee module)
-Hikvision cctv

Not automated but hdmi all camera picture into Samsung tv hdmi input
"hey google change the lounge tv input to hdmi2

TeaLeaf:I think my Mitsi Air con is a bit old school for converting to Smart, it must be a 2008 model, still going strong. No possibilities?

Not sure about Mitsubishi but I have a CZ-TACG1 for my Panasonic heatpump which integrates with home assistant.
If there is nothing like that you could always use an IR blaster.

If you really want a smart home as in the first part of the thread title "...Doing a smart home...", then consider starting with a new property and designing it in.

Sorry, can't help you with the second part "on the cheap" as I've never seen this done!!!!
