fearandloathing:

I wonder if this is a typo...

Hmmm... so it does. I got mine from a seller on TradeMe as it was a cheaper, they said was NZ product. Didn’t come with the Chime Pro either (which I wasn’t concerned about since it looks like the uglier version 1). But the plug-in adapter would have been bloody handy.

I’ll email them and ask.

No, those were a seperate purchase directly from Ring.

And in hindsight should have spent a bit more and gotten the Ring Pro from them as well if it includes the plug-in adapter.

Looks like the one I got is specifically for retrofitting to existing doorbell wiring and chime. Hence they weren’t included.

Get you electrician to put something like this in the fuseboard, nice and tidy.

https://nz.rs-online.com/web/p/din-rail-panel-mount-transformers/8802609/

Cost a bit more but looks a whole lot nicer than a wall wart and cable up the wall.

@Paul1977

It occurs to me I actually have a spare ring transformer, unused. I got a replacement pro sent to me under warranty, I kept the power supply when I sent my old pro back.

$35

old style chime pro $20

2x  pro corner plate $10 each.

Plus shipping or pick up Wellington.

Bung: Your sparky doesn't seem very motivated.

As others have said in the absence of other sources that your sparky probably should have, Jaycar have several options.

If it is not practical to mount a transformer anywhere a plug in one is https://www.jaycar.co.nz/24vac-1a-unregulated-power-supply-bareends/p/MP3032

"A useful plug pack suitable for any device requiring 24VAC power up to 1 amp. Ideal for our 24VAC surveillance camera etc."

Thanks @Bung, I get confused with the the difference between watts and VA. The Ring adaptor outputs 24VAC 20VA, while the Ring Pro just says the input should be 16-24VAC, 40VA max.

If I understand correctly VA is calculated by Volts x Amps, so the JayCar one would be 24VA (so suitable for the Ring Pro)?

Isn't the calculation of wattage also Volts x Amps? But I've read that Watts and VA are not that same thing?

And I does the JayCar one being unregulated matter?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I'm purchasing the right thing.

@mentor I'll show my ignorance here. It says 9-24V, but the specs say dual 9V and 12V output. Can this be wired up to send 24V to to a single device?

@Paul1977 I've attached the exact transformer in use. It's connected to the 18V terminal.

In October 2019 and just before the government added GST to goods ordered from outside NZ, I ordered a Ring Doorbell Pro from an australian website as it was about 100 dollars cheaper (just the doorbell, no transformer or chime). It item arrived and I passed it over to the electrical company doing the wiring of my new build.

Moved it to my new home in June 2020 after lockdown delays. Doorbell wasn't working as they couldn't source a transformer with the right voltage, etc. The transformer they installed got my doorbell working but for only a couple of hours before it refused to connect to my wifi network.

Checked the various forums and ordered a Ring Transformer to fix the low power issue. The new Ring transformer immediately got the doorbell connecting to my network, but after a few hours that failed too.  Spoke to Ring Customer Services and they accepted that the doorbell was duff and posted a new one.   This arrived and connected without issue but wouldn't alert me.... not much point having a doorbell that doesn't work.

Finally, a second doorbell from Ring was installed and has been working happily for the last few weeks.

So, buy your Ring Doorbell Pro with a Ring Transformer to avoid the issues that I had.

Watts is the real power drawn by the equipment, while volt-amps are called the “apparent power” and are the product of the voltage applied to the equipment times the current drawn by the equipment. The watt rating determines the actual power purchased from the utility company and the heat loading generated by the equipment; and the VA rating is used for sizing wiring and circuit breakers. The ratio of the watts to VA is called the “Power Factor” and is expressed either as a number (i.e. – 0.8) or a percentage (i.e. 80%). This power factor is what really matters when sizing a UPS for your specific requirements.

Hope that makes sense to you

Paul1977:

I've purchased a Ring Video Doorbell Pro which I now need a transformer to power it.

It says it requires the following:

Requires a transformer (not included): 16-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz

No halogen or garden-lighting transformers; no DC transformer/power supply

They sell a Plug-In Adapter which outputs 24VAC 20VA and would be ideal as it's only $35 and is made specifically for the doorbell - but is out of stock with no ETA.

Can anyone advise were I could source a suitable alternative, ideally for around the same price point?

Thanks

I bought the Pro and it had a transformer in the box.

I bought the Pro and it had a transformer in the box.

Apparently mine was the "Basic" kit which is no longer shown on the Ring site. Doesn't include the gen 1 Chime Pro or the transformer, but does include the "Pro Power Kit" for connecting to existing doorbell wiring.

I would still come out $80 better of buying the transformer separately but waiting on stock. They said it shouldn't be more than 2 weeks, but that was probably 2 weeks ago and is still listed is out of stock.
