I've purchased a Ring Video Doorbell Pro which I now need a transformer to power it.

It says it requires the following:

Requires a transformer (not included): 16-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz

No halogen or garden-lighting transformers; no DC transformer/power supply

They sell a Plug-In Adapter which outputs 24VAC 20VA and would be ideal as it's only $35 and is made specifically for the doorbell - but is out of stock with no ETA.

Can anyone advise were I could source a suitable alternative, ideally for around the same price point?

Thanks

Take it in to Jaycar. You'll need to make sure whatever you get can physically plug in to the doorbell as well as supplying the right voltage etc.

Aren't you building? Get the Electrician to put a bell transformer in the distribution board to keep it tidy.

As above, give some thought to where it's going to live, so you can get to it easily if necessary in future.

I have a ring device and the battery life is pretty good.  I get a month or more out of it with no transformer and it's been easy enough to charge up that I haven't bothered trying to wire something permanent.

I bought a transformer from Jaycar and got my sparky to wire it up. It's been going great for almost 2 years now.

I also get pretty good battery out of my 1st gen Ring - probably 6 or 7 weeks between charges. I have motion alerting on as well as the setting to connect on-demand which uses more battery as it has to stay always connected/ready to receive a request.

My house was built without any bell wiring and the spot I need to have a doorbell would be hard/impossible to retrofit (short to removing plaster off about 4 separate walls). If I was building now, I'd be running data cable and looking at a PoE solution (like the Ring Elite).

Yep, building. Original plan was a PoE doorbell so had CAT6 provisioned from network cabinet. Didn't realise that PoE doorbells seem to be few and far between, and we need something that has a corner kit, which narrows the selection down even further.

Decided on the Ring Pro for the form factor, but since it's not PoE we just want to send the 16-24VAC from the network cabinet via the existing CAT6. That way it's an easy conversion to proper PoE later on.

Thanks @mentor I'll have a look at that one.

@mentor I'll show my ignorance here. It says 9-24V, but the specs say dual 9V and 12V output. Can this be wired up to send 24V to to a single device?

Wasn't worth spending the extra ~$100 to go to the (PoE capable) Ring Elite?

I just told my sparky the specs and he sourced and installed one.

The Ring Elite is flush mount only, so no corner wedge kit. Because of the placement of the door and where the bell needs to go the Elite unfortunately wasn’t going to work for us. If it had been the same form factor as the Pro I would have happily paid the extra $100 for it.

Sparky is saying it’s an oddball rating and hard to source (which seem strange me), and is saying $170 or something. He’s suggesting to just wait until the Ring Plug-In adapter is back in stock since it’s so much cheaper than the alternative he can source - but with no ETA I have no idea how long that might be. Hence looking alternatives.

Ideally something like the Ring Adapter that just plugs into a standard NZ power socket.

Just get a plug in transformer from Jaycar, just make sure you get the right voltage rating like 12v not 24v and AC or DC etc,

I wonder if this is a typo.

Requires a transformer (not included): 16-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz

No halogen or garden-lighting transformers; no DC transformer/power supply

Your sparky doesn't seem very motivated.

As others have said in the absence of other sources that your sparky probably should have, Jaycar have several options.

If it is not practical to mount a transformer anywhere a plug in one is https://www.jaycar.co.nz/24vac-1a-unregulated-power-supply-bareends/p/MP3032

"A useful plug pack suitable for any device requiring 24VAC power up to 1 amp. Ideal for our 24VAC surveillance camera etc."
