I used to run a separate NR docker instance outside of HA.  It works very well without any issues.

However I now switched to using the built-in NR integration of HA as its easier to manage new releases/revisions of NR.

Won't that only work if HA has it's own machine (or virtual machine)?

Ah yes, I've since moved HA to its own machine (HA Blue).

So if I was to use Node Red instead of HA automations, what would be the best node to determine dusk/dawn? Just to clarify, I am using a door/window sensor to switch on a light when the door is opened but only after dusk and before dawn.

Thanks.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

I use two, depending on what I am trying to achieve.

"Time Range" - which you can get it to use terms like night, dawn, dusk etc. Allows for offsets. Has built in piece for entering location coords.

"Sun events" - requires coords to be fed to it from another node.

Try the time range one first would be my suggestion.
