Visual check of where the conductors are punched down would be the first step, then a cable tester if you have one - even the cheap ones will be OK. This sort of thing https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/computers/cables-adaptors/networking/listing/3251212809

Plug your AP directly into the switch & see if it's working properly or not.

If not, then start to look harder at the cabling/terminations.

I would try this method before buying a cable tester

Just be aware that there's multiple standards with different power capabilities but all called POE.

It may not necessarily be plug and play.

OK, had a good look at the cable and it looks like one bit isn’t connected.
Or is it supposed to look like this?
If it isn’t, is there an easy fix?

That looks rough, but should be ok. Have you tried either the original AP at your switch, or your other AP at that point?
The kink in the flex doesn't look to hot.

I tried the AP elsewhere and it actually works, so must be the cable.

Is this bit supposed to look like that? (See red circle)

Next thing I would try is swapping out the patch cable, see if it's that. Your circled bit is OK- the installer hasn't trimmed the end off - see how the other three are much shorter?

The correct tool will punch the wire into the connector and trim off the excess - if the excess hasn't been trimmed, it may not have been punched in fully either.

danepak: So I’ve got a spare Ethernet cable (PoE powered) hanging from the ceiling downstairs.
Are there PoE lights available?

It depends. Is it Real Man's PoE:

or just that woosy low-voltage stuff?

You jest, but lighting over PoE is very much a thing. My office at work is kitted out entirely with such panel lights.

I swapped the cable in the patch panel.
So far, so good.
Thanks for your advice.

Interestingly I believe the suggestion was to try replacing the patch cable shown in your photos (it's the darker blue cable). But well done if the other end was the problem!

Likelihood the patch lead is faulty is next to NIL.
